It’s nearly the end of July, and if you are like me, your heart might be feeling a little pinched at the idea of your beloved child moving out of your house soon and heading off (or back) to college. It feels very bittersweet to me and I don’t want to dwell on it, so we’ll move straight to the news of the day.
Weekly message for P’29s
As we do every Tuesday during the summer, we sent our Weekly Update for our incoming P’29 parents and families. This week’s message is about Getting to Know Winston-Salem and includes recommendations from families of sophomores, juniors, and seniors for local hotels, places to eat, and more.
A clarification in today’s message regarding when your ’29s can move in: we referenced LJVM, which is the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum (just off campus), where check in begins. The August 12 Weekly Update will be our Move-In Guide and will explain all move-in details then; thank you for your patience as we work out all those final details.
Clarification on Club Sports webinar tonight
My friends in Club Sports tell me that tonight’s Club Sports webinar (tonight at 6:00 p.m. Eastern) will be recorded for those who can’t join live. The webinar will be posted on the Club Sports website in the coming days.
Tuition insurance reminder
Because so many families might be vacationing at various points in the summer, there are some messages I repeat here just to make sure we catch everyone – and one of those messages is about optional tuition insurance.
When you log into the QuikPay portal to pay tuition, you will be prompted to enroll in or decline GradGuard tuition insurance. As a reminder, the GradGuard tuition insurance plan ensures up to a 100% tuition refund throughout the semester for tuition, fees, meal plan, and housing (up to $50,000.00) in case of withdrawal due to accident, illness, mental health, death of a payer, or loss of employment of a payer. The deadline to enroll in tuition insurance for the Fall is 8/24.
Note that there is no financial incentive to the University for students to enroll in the program. We just want to share the opportunity for peace of mind to those who could benefit. So consider it – or not – as meets the needs of your family.
Wait Chapel looks…different
Summertime is construction, repair, and/or routine maintenance season on college campuses. It’s easier to do those sorts of projects when the campus is not fully occupied during the fall or spring semesters.
And as I was on the Quad this morning, I could not help but notice that Wait Chapel looks…different:
They are doing repairs or restorations on the clock faces (there is a clock face on all four sides of the chapel spire, did you know that?) And at one point, I could see a worker standing right in the middle of this empty clock face. I wish I had gotten a picture of it because it was crazy looking to see a man where the clock arms should be, but I missed my moment.
More on clocks
Just for giggles, since we are talking about clocks, I thought it might be fun to include one of my favorite poems about clocks.
Funeral Blues
By W. H. Auden
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.
Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message ‘He is Dead’.
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.
He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.
The stars are not wanted now; put out every one,
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.
And it wouldn’t be Summer 2025 without a cheeky reference to pop culture happenings. IYKYK :)
