We come to the end of the work week and there are a couple of things to smile about today:
We have some great news about Wake Forest’s new initiative in Charlotte – very exciting. And for those of you with Deacs here in summer school, it is going to be a pleasant weekend: warm and mostly sunny (unlike last weekend/Memorial Day, when it was cold and rainy, folks might actually be able to swim this weekend!)
Whatever you and yours do this weekend, I hope you have fun and make the most of it!
Wake Forest expands to Charlotte’s Innovation District, marking historic milestone in education
I loved reading this story today about how Wake Forest is dramatically increasing our impact in NC through a new academic campus in The Pearl, Charlotte’s innovation district, which officially opened its doors this week. Here’s a taste of the story:
“Anchored by the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, the expansion is poised to transform medical education, research and economic development in one of the country’s fastest-growing cities.
Wake Forest’s presence in the Pearl promises groundbreaking collaboration and innovation. It is a pivotal moment for both the University and the Queen City.
‘We are proud of the role our University and alumni continue to play in Charlotte,’ said Wake Forest University President Susan R. Wente. ‘Wake Forest’s presence in The Pearl allows us to train future physicians, researchers, and leaders in a collaborative, urban environment that reflects the needs and opportunities of the communities we serve. This is more than just a new campus — it’s a strategic investment in the future of healthcare and innovation.’
Charlotte has long been the largest U.S. city without a four-year medical school. That will change this summer, when Wake Forest School of Medicine opens its second campus and welcomes the inaugural class of medical students in Charlotte. The medical school will be located in the Howard R. Levine Center for Education. Wake Forest also plans to move the Wake Forest School of Professional Studies and the School of Business’ nationally ranked MBA program from the current location in Uptown Charlotte to The Pearl.”

Personal Finance summer course – great for financial literacy
From time to time, I have parents and family members ask if there are any financial literacy type courses that their students could take. Why, yes there are!
We are offering this business class in Summer Session II: BUS 131. Personal Finance for Everyone. (3 h) with Professor Kyre Lahtinen. The course is described as follows:
“This course is designed to set students with no required previous financial knowledge on a path to a life of financial empowerment and freedom. The course covers financial planning, budgeting, credit cards, investing, income taxes, financial markets, insurance, purchasing a home or car, estate planning and many other critical financial issues.
The course emphasizes current relevant laws and regulations, construction of detailed models, and relevant research. Open to all Wake Forest students. Does not count toward a School of Business major or concentration. Online, synchronous.”
So if you have been hoping that your student can take a class that helps them learn some of these key personal finance concepts, encourage them to register for the class. Don’t miss this opportunity!
June 12 housing webinar for ’29s and P’29s
Next week my colleagues in Residence Life and Housing are hosting a webinar about housing for first-year students. Beginning Your Journey in The Forest: Housing for New Students will be held on June 12th at noon EDT via Zoom webinar: (note that the webinar link will open for participants on June 12; you do not need to click now or pre-register, just save the link to your calendar).
“Incoming first-year students and their families are invited to learn more about our housing process and have a chance to ask questions! Transfer students will receive more information about their housing selection process in mid-June. The webinar will be recorded and posted after the event for families/students unable to attend live.”
Note to our P’26s-28s that this will NOT cover any aspect of upperclass student housing; it is just for first-year students and families.
