We are coming to the end of the week and also to the end of Summer Session I: classes for Summer I end on Monday, June 30 and final exam days are Tuesday and Wednesday, July 1-2.
Wake will then be closed for the Fourth of July holiday next Friday, so a short week for us next week. Hopefully the predicted temperatures of high 80s/low 90s will come to pass as well.
We have just a few items today. As always, I invite you to dig in to what serves you, and skip past anything that does not.
From Wente’s Desk: summer reading to inspire empathy, community, and reflection
President Wente has shared a new blog post in her running series, From Wente’s Desk. In this post, she talks about summer reading:
“When I think of the summer, it often includes making a list of ‘to do’ goals – the most important of which is reflecting on the past academic year, planning for the next, AND diving into making time for reading. And, just as in the past three Junes, I enjoy sharing my recent favorites and planned readings with you.
This summer, I am focusing on readings that inspire empathy and reflecting on the practice of reading fiction as a way to strengthen our individual and collective ‘humanity muscles.’”

Tennis news: Dostanic qualifies for U.S. Open
I saw this great headline from our men’s tennis program: Dostanic qualifies for U.S. Open. “One month after helping Wake Forest win the NCAA men’s tennis team championship, Stefan Dostanic has won the 2024-25 American Collegiate Wild Card Playoff, earning him an automatic spot in the 2025 US Open main draw. The Open will begin Sunday, Aug. 24, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York, N.Y.”
Congratulations to Stefan, and Go Deacs!
Virtual New Student Reception recording (and reminder of the Q&A doc)
For those P’29s and ’29s who were not able to attend our Virtual New Student Reception on Tuesday night, we now have the recording of the webinar online (you can turn on the closed captioning button in YouTube to see captions if needed). As a reminder, the Q&A from the webinar is also available.
Reminder: Family Weekend event registration opens July 8 at 10 a.m.
I was in a Family Weekend meeting this morning and want to be sure all our families are aware of when you can register for Family Weekend events:
Family Weekend event registration begins next Tuesday (July 8) on the Family Weekend website at 10 a.m. Here is the tentative schedule for the weekend:
- On Friday, the 26th, Registration and check-in (i.e., packet pickup) for Family Weekend will begin at 10 a.m. We will host our annual Deacon Family Festivities that afternoon, followed by the Night of Student Entertainment. There will be several dining options available both on and off-campus for your dining pleasure.
- On Saturday, the 27th will host a variety of pre-game activities, which include access to the student tailgate area before the Wake Forest vs. GA Tech football game. Access to the student tailgate area will require the Family Weekend credential and a game ticket.
- On Sunday, the 28th, we conclude the weekend with a farewell brunch (tickets sold separately). Other activities and experiences such as tours, lectures, presentations, and the like are currently being planned for Friday as well.
- More information will be available at familyweekend.wfu.edu http://familyweekend.wfu.edu in early July. For now, mark your calendars and plan to order your event tickets on July 8th.
For those still looking for hotel accommodations, please peruse the Visit Winston Salem website for current hotel listings in the area; also consider Airbnb, VRBO, etc. in the Piedmont Triad area (i.e., Greensboro, High Point, and Winston-Salem).
We look forward to having you with us in September!
