Happy Monday, Deac families! We are well into June and well into Summer Session I, with a good number of Deacs on campus for the Summer Management Program as well as other classes. And there are still seats available for many Summer Session II classes; if your Deacs are interested, they can contact the summer school office to get assistance with registering.

Short news day today, so let’s get right to it.

Reminder: testing of emergency systems Monday-Weds

Wake Forest’s Indoor Emergency Alert Systems will be tested from Monday, June 9, through Wednesday, June 11. Testing will occur between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. The tests are being conducted to ensure that the University’s indoor emergency notification systems are operating properly.

During the testing, the indoor emergency alarm system will test alerts for: Testing Alert Message Shelter in Place, Tornado Alert, General Weather Alert, Evacuate Building, Active Shooter, Armed Intruder and All Clear

Facilities and Campus Services will carry out testing. During these tests, no action is required in response to alert messages. Read the full message: Reminder: testing of emergency systems Monday-Weds.

Former head coach Dave Clawson appointed as ACLC Executive Affiliate

I saw this news release late last week and thought it might be of interest to families with students in the Business School:

“David Clawson as an Executive Affiliate with the Allegacy Center for Leadership and Character at the Wake Forest School of Business….

In his role as an ACLC Executive Affiliate, Dave will be called upon for engagement in many ways including:

  • Serving as guest speaker in classes across various academic programs
  • Coaching students and student teams
  • Assisting in enhancing the Deacon Leader System to support the Athletic Department
  • Co-teaching select lessons in the MIL 122 Foundation of Leadership course in the spring
  • Serving on programmatic panel discussions and/or capstone course boards
  • Serving as a student, faculty and/or staff mentor as needed
  • Assisting the ACLC in strategic planning and program development and in building strategic leadership materials.”

There is a lot to look forward to as Dave Clawson helps “enhance the development of leaders of character.”

In praise of magnolias

Longtime readers of the Daily Deac know I am a big fan of magnolias, the South’s heady, intoxicating flower. The magnolias are out now in force, and for those whose Deacs are here for summer school, do encourage them to seek out the magnolia trees on campus and inhale deeply. My favorite time to go magnoliaing is right after sundown, when it is a little cooler and the night colors are beautiful. The scent of a magnolia is hedonistic: pure pleasure for your nose – and nice on the eyes too. The quintessential flower of a hot Southern summer.

Correction re: tuition insurance

Our June 3 Weekly Message for new families referenced optional tuition insurance. The link in that message was not the correct one. I am told by my colleagues that in early July the tuition insurance website will have the correct link to the 2025-26 year’s tuition insurance option. So take no action now, but know I will share the new link in July once I have it.
