Neuroscience, Housing, and Society (oh my!)
In this Issue:
- Announcing the Boswell Presidential Chair of Neuroscience and Society
- Reminder of P’29 and ’29 housing webinar on Zoom tomorrow (6/12)
- SWAK University Services: featuring room essentials for your Deacs
Another short news day at Mother So Dear. Today there are a couple of items that are related to housing: the first just for P’29s, and the other for families of any year. We also have a great story about an exceptional teacher-scholar who does “cross-disciplinary teaching and research at the intersection of neuroscience and society.” We’ll start there first, so read on…
Announcing the Boswell Presidential Chair of Neuroscience and Society
Today Wake Forest announced Dr. Kenneth T. Kishida, as the inaugural Boswell Presidential Chair of Neuroscience and Society, “advancing the University’s interdisciplinary initiative to connect brain science with pressing societal issues.”
The announcement shares that “Kishida, internationally recognized for his work on the neurocomputational mechanisms underlying learning, decision-making and conscious experience, is an associate professor of translational neuroscience at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. His appointment supports the University’s Neuroscience and Society initiative, aimed at expanding and enhancing the University’s vibrant community of teacher-scholars dedicated to advancing neuroscience for the benefit of individuals and society.”
I particularly liked this quote from Dr. Kishida: “There’s a real curiosity, both in academic circles and in the broader public, about what neuroscience can tell us about how we live, work, and relate to one another. What excites me most about the Neuroscience and Society initiative is that it embraces that curiosity. It’s not just about delivering answers, it’s about collaborating with communities to ask better questions and explore together what this science means for our shared future.”
How exciting that our students engaged in neuroscience courses now have the ability to partner with this incredible thought leader and faculty member. You can read the full story of Dr. Kishida’s appointment here.
Reminder of P’29 and ’29 housing webinar on Zoom tomorrow (6/12)
I wanted to remind any P’29s and ’29s in the Daily Deacdom that tomorrow is the Zoom webinar about housing for first-year students:
Beginning Your Journey in The Forest: Housing for New Students
Thursday, June 12th at noon EDT
Link to the Zoom webinar: (note that the webinar link will open for participants on June 12; you do not need to click now or pre-register, click on it tomorrow at noon).
This webinar will give incoming students/families the chance to hear more about the housing process at Wake, and will allow you to ask questions. The webinar will be recorded and posted after the event for folks who could not attend live.
And a reminder that this will only cover new student housing, so it is not intended for P’26s-’28s.
SWAK University Services: featuring room essentials for your Deacs
I got this message from my colleagues in Residence Life and Housing. They have partnered with a company called SWAK University Services, which offers college room essentials for students.
“Move-In Day Is Coming — Let’s Make It a Little Easier
We know Move-In can be an exciting (and sometimes overwhelming) time for students and families. One way to ease the stress? Make sure your student’s room is ready before you even arrive on campus.
We’ve partnered with SWAK University Services to offer a custom store just for Wake Forest students — featuring room essentials designed with college life in mind.
Shop the Wake Forest Store: https://www.swaku.com/wfu-room
Here’s why this can be a helpful option for families:
- Guaranteed-to-Fit Twin XL Bedding – Not all “Twin XL” sheets are created equal. These are designed to fit the beds in our residence halls.
- Free Shipping to Campus – Your order will be ready for pickup when you arrive for Move-In.
- Bundle & Save – Exclusive 15% off bundles that include bedding, organizers, towels, and other college essentials.
- Support for Wake – A portion of proceeds supports Residence Life and Housing programming.
Important Deadline: If you’d like items shipped to campus or to your home, please place your order by Monday, July 22.
Shipping Details: When ordering, see below on how to best ensure the package gets to your student:
- For incoming students (i.e., Class of 2029) who have not received their campus box number yet (box numbers are typically assigned in late July/early August):
Student Name
1834 Wake Forest Road
Box 2029*
Winston-Salem, NC 27109
* IMPORTANT: Box 2029 is a temporary address for new students to have
items shipped to campus; it is not your student’s permanent box number
- For continuing students (i.e., Class of 2026, 2027, and 2028): Please use your student’s campus box number.
A quick note: Popular items do sell out — especially bedding and organizers — so we recommend ordering early if possible.
Thanks for partnering with us to help your student feel settled and supported as they transition to campus life. We’re looking forward to welcoming your Deac in August!”
As always, whether you opt in to this is up to you – but we want you to know it is available.
