As I type this (around 11 a.m.), the outdoor temperature is 98 but the heat index makes it feel like 101. This is not the June weather I am used to :/ and I know there are many other states experiencing record highs, too. Hoping the heatwave passes everyone quickly!

Now on to today’s topics…

Interesting article about parenting teenagers

I saw this headline on our news.wfu.edu site and thought the Daily Deacdom might enjoy it, since so many of us are parenting teenagers. The article is entitled “Teens aren’t the problem. Stereotypes are.” and here is a snippet:

“Teenagers are often seen as moody, rebellious and overly focused on what their peers think. Wake Forest Psychology Professor Christy Buchanan says these stereotypes can hinder good parenting and negatively affect parent-teen relationships.

Buchanan, a developmental psychologist, has spent years researching parenting beliefs and practices. Her research suggests that negative stereotypes about adolescents can lead to expectations for specific children that are more negative than they should be based on the child’s history of behavior. And, they can make parents less confident and less effective.

She explains how looking beyond adolescent stereotypes can lead to better parenting.”

Virtual New Student Reception tonight (P’29s and ’29s)

Tonight from 7-8:30 p.m. is our Virtual New Student Reception for new ’29 students and their families. You can find the login information here. This reception will feature administrators and students who will talk about academics and upcoming class registration, campus life, and tips on how students can get their best start at Wake (and how their families can best support them). The webinar will be recorded and posted at that same link above within the next several days. We look forward to seeing our ’29s and P’29s tonight!

Weekly Message for P’29s/draft Orientation schedule

As we do every Tuesday, we sent our Weekly Message for P’29 families. Today’s message was about the Orientation and New Deac Week Schedule. In case you missed any of our weekly messages, you can find them all archived here.

Local recommendations

Since our weekly message for P’29s today had to do with move-in and Orientation, we thought it might be helpful to share some local recommendations for restaurants lodging, and/or other local activities now.

Earlier this spring, we invited current families to share their favorite local spots for breakfast, lunch, dinner, bars, and other local places of interest, as well as places to stay. Here is this summer’s list of Wake family favorites. Hope this is helpful to you as you plan travel to Winston-Salem.
