Today is a big and busy day: we launched the New Students website for the Class of 2029, Thursday is when we send out our WFU Should Know student e-newsletter and the Inside WFU faculty and staff newsletter, and today my COM 162 students are presenting their final projects to me (very excited to see their hard work!) So we’ll jump right in to the news.
Adoption of Statement on Freedom of Expression and Academic Freedom
Yesterday, President Wente and Provost Gillespie shared a message with the campus community about the adoption of a statement on freedom of expression and academic freedom. Here is an excerpt:
“We are pleased to announce that the Wake Forest University Board of Trustees has adopted the proposed Statement on Freedom of Expression and Academic Freedom (“Statement”) as an expression of the values and commitments of Wake Forest and its Trustees. This makes the Statement a foundational resource for our campus community.
This Statement underscores Wake Forest’s commitment to the free exchange of ideas, which is fundamental to academic freedom and the pursuit of knowledge. It ensures that all members of our university community, including students, faculty, and staff, can express their views without fear of censorship or reprisal. It fosters a more inclusive and welcoming campus environment by respecting all voices.”
Newstudents.wfu.edu is live!
Our New Students website is now live! Newstudents.wfu.edu is the central location for all information about Move-In, Orientation, and required activities for incoming ’29 students and their P’29 families.
Pay special attention to the Parents and Families Overview and the Parent and Family Checklist. That checklist is your to-do list. There are some required items, and some strongly recommended items (please consider doing all of these too!) There is a First-Year Student Checklist (and also a Transfer Student Checklist) on the New Students website.
We also sent our first weekly email to P’29s (read the full text here). If you did not find it in your inbox, our email may have been interpreted by your Internet Service Provider as spam. You may wish to add parents@wfu.edu, returns@wfu.edu, and alumni@wfu.edu as contacts and check your spam/junk/quarantine folder to ensure no Wake Forest emails have landed there; if so, please mark us as a safe sender or move us to your Inbox.
Football tickets are on sale for Family Weekend game
Tickets for the Family Weekend football game (Sept. 27 against GA Tech) are now on sale.
NOTE: Students can get a free ticket to sit in the students’ football section with the Screamin’ Demon Rewards App (ticket claims open at noon the Monday before the game: Sept. 22 at noon ET). If your student wants to sit with you, you will need to purchase a ticket for your student.
Note that Family Weekend event tickets do not go on sale until July 8; we appreciate your patience until then,
Tech checklist for graduating students
P’25s and families of graduating students, this news was sent to graduating Deacs yesterday:
“As we approach graduation season, commencement and the days ahead, you may wish to save some important materials from your time at Wake Forest. Students retain access to Wake Forest University accounts and services for 60 days after they graduate, and after this period, the account is disabled.
We’ve created a Pre-Graduation checklist on our Information For Wake Forest Graduates Webpage to assist you in your transition to a Wake Forest alum. The checklist includes step-by-step instructions and key dates for important, time-sensitive tasks.”
Senior Profile – Rowan Henchy
My colleagues who work in video and social media have been hard at work on a variety of videos about graduating seniors, and today I wanted to share this video about senior Rowan Henchy.
Must confess: my first reaction was ‘wow, does she look like her mom!’ (Mom is Brooke Shields). As someone who works in communications and is teaching a Communication class, I love how excited she is about the field. Go, Rowan!
And you can see the full Senior Showcase here.
Continued best wishes to our Deacs taking finals. You are coming into the home stretch, friends. Do your best, then let it rest!
