Today is jam packed for me so only a couple of stories to share, all of them to do with sports. And speaking of sports and the word ‘jam,’ I saw a Campus Life Instagram story* about Jam for Janey, a student-led philanthropic effort to honor Janey Thompson, who passed away last year. Jam for Janey is a 3×3 basketball tournament that is taking place this afternoon/early evening. I expect my colleagues might share more coverage of the event on the Campus Life Instagram account after the fact.

* As a reminder, the Instagram story expires after 24 hours, so catch it today if you can.

Now to today’s other sporting news…

Baseball Analytics program seeking new students (may be especially attractive to ’29s/younger students)

Around this time last year, I had the good fortune of talking with one of our students who works with the Baseball Analytics team, which is an official offshoot of our baseball program (you can read last year’s interview here for background if you wish).

Each year, the Baseball Analytics team recruits new members to join the team, and one of my current students asked me if I could help get the word out, particularly to P’29 families who are already in the fold, as it can be really helpful to have students who participate all four years they are at Wake Forest.

Whether you are a P’29 or any other year, if your student loves baseball, data, and/or coding, encourage your Deac to check out the Baseball Analytics program. Here’s how my student, Peyton, describes the work:

“Hi! I’m Peyton Polett, a junior at Wake Forest and a member of the Wake Forest Baseball Analytics Team. We’re a team of 23 students who work directly with the Wake Forest Baseball program to collect and analyze data that supports the coaching staff. We’re currently looking for new members for the 2025–2026 school year, and we’d love to connect with incoming students and underclassmen who are interested in sports, data, or both.

Being part of this team has personally been one of the most rewarding experiences of my time at Wake, as it is a unique opportunity to work directly with a nationally-recognized baseball program while building skills in analytics and communication.

Applications open April 15 and close May 9. Check out the flyer below and students can click here to apply!”

Wake alumni in The Masters tournament

For the golf fans in the Daily Deacdom, you might be especially interested in this tidbit:

“Three Wake Forest men’s golf alumni – Cameron Young, Will Zalatoris and amateur Evan Beck – will be taking part in the 89th Masters, which started today and runs through Sunday at Augusta National Golf Club. Beck will be making his first Masters appearance, Zalatoris will be making his fifth, and Young will be making his fourth.”

Wishing all our Deac golf alumni the very best at The Masters!
