It’s Humpday – the middle of the work week. By the time you read this, you’ll be two days away from the weekend – so let’s all finish the week strong!

Today we have a jambalaya of stories – hope some of them will resonate with you.

Video of golfer Carolina Lopez-Chacarra

My colleagues who work with social media have been doing a number of senior profiles on the WFUniversity Instagram account (which if you are not following, you ought to!) One of the senior profiles they did was of our student-athlete Carolina Lopez-Chacarra of women’s golf:

“From Madrid to the Magnolia Quad, Carolina Lopez-Chacarra found more than a major at Wake Forest. She found a family. Whether on the golf course or in the classroom, she’s learned the power of positivity, self-love and chasing big dreams. Next stop: the LPGA.”

Watch the video about Carolina. I don’t know her, but her story made this mom’s heart proud!

Housing Selection Help Desk and mixer to meet potential roommates today

We are in the midst of housing selection, and typically at this time of year some of our students who have yet to select rooms may be trying to form new groups, or find roommates/suitemates. The Office of Residence Life and Housing sent a message to resident students this morning about the process. You can read the full message here, but I am sharing a couple of snippets below that might be helpful

“Our Housing Selection Help Desk is in the lobby of our office in Angelou Hall. We are happy to talk with you before your selection time about group size, finding roommates, etc., and should you run into any issues at your selection time, we can best help in person.

Our team will be available during the following hours:

  • Wednesday, April 16 from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Thursday, April 17 from 1 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Cookies and Conversations – Wednesday, April 16 | 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Angelou Parlor, Open to all residents on-campus

Looking for last minute members for your Housing Selection roommate group? Stop by to mingle with others also looking and get last minute Housing Selection questions answered by our Assignments team.”

Should your students need help with roommate groups or meeting people, urge them to take advantage of the Help Desk and the Cookies and Conversation mixer.

Late Night Breakfast next Weds. April 23

I am happy to share that we will be doing a Late Night Breakfast in advance of final exams. Late Night Breakfast is when we offer free breakfast foods (no meal swipe needed!) served to students by staff and faculty in the late night hours: 10 p.m.-midnight in the Pit. There is music, a Link Loot auction (your students get Link Loot points when they attend events, IIRC), and general good times.

I saw a yard sign announcing LNB on campus yesterday, so hopefully your Deacs are aware of it already. But if not, encourage them to go. I am volunteering as a server and I hope to see your students and wish them well as they prep for finals!

Your Deacs should keep an eye on the WTL website, because the offerings can change throughout the week, with new things added. Here is what they are showing right now, just to give you a taste.

Encourage your students to donate (rather than trash) and swap items

I have this theory that every time you unpack, the volume of your stuff increases by about a third by the time you try and repack it. So at the end of the semester, sometimes our students find themselves willing to part with a lot of things. Instead of just trashing those items, we encourage students to minimize waste by donating those unwanted items.

They can give any unwanted items to Deacs Donate effort. Donations will be accepted in designated areas at each residence hall starting the week of April 21. Your students will have seen they are already coning off some of the parking spaces near the halls to make room for the donation area. Not all items are accepted, so your students need to review what can be accepted for donation.

There are also going to be Spring Clean Out free swaps April 29 and May 4: “As you pack up for summer, don’t toss your stuff — SWAP it! Join us for an end-of-year exchange where you can donate, trade, or score pre-loved treasures for free. From clothes and residence hall decor to school supplies and more, this is an easy way to lighten your load, reduce waste, and support a more sustainable campus.”

P25s and P’28s, please encourage your Deacs to take the NSSE survey

P’25s and ’28s, we still need your help encouraging your Deac’s participation in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). They received an email at their wfu.edu address on March 31. We very much need a high response rate to get actionable data that can improve student engagement and satisfaction. Students who complete the survey will get a free small coffee at Smith’s Café plus a chance to win a $99 gift card to the Deacon Shop. This is a way students can give back and let their voices be heard. Thank you for encouraging their participation.

And as we close out this Humpday post, here’s a little Humpday humor for you: who remembers this? I must confess, this was a favorite in my household 🙂
