April is the Coolest Month
In this Issue:
- Family Weekend football tickets to go on sale May 1
- Painting believed to be a lost Leonardo discovered in building on the original campus in Wake Forest, NC
T.S. Eliot’s famous poem The Waste Land begins with:
“April is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.
Winter kept us warm, covering
Earth in forgetful snow, feeding
A little life with dried tubers.”
While Eliot thought April was the cruellest month, it feels on campus like April is the coolest month. Not temperature cool – it is starting to get rather warm – but cool in that the days are long and sunny, current students are seeing the end to the spring semester and are looking forward to the summer, and we are about to welcome accepted students and their families for one last visit before admissions deposits are due May 1. It’s excitement everywhere – and today I have two exciting stories for you.

Painting believed to be a lost Leonardo discovered in building on the original campus in Wake Forest, NC
This next item is just an unbelievable story. On our original campus in the town of Wake Forest, NC, about 100 miles to the east of Winston-Salem, some repair work was taking place in one of the original Old Campus buildings built in the mid-1800s. As workers were replacing rotting boards in the attic of the main administration building, they discovered a false front to one of the walls. When they removed the aging wood, they found a large parcel wrapped in old quilts, about the size of a large encyclopedia.
When workers unwrapped the bundle, the found what looked to be a very old painting inside. The painting shows a young fishwife with a barrel of fish that she is presumably bringing to the market. The painting was examined by the director of the Regional Museum of Decorative Arts, David St. Hubbins, who believes it to be Pesce d’Aprile, a long lost work from Leonardo! The painting will now be sent to Sotheby’s for formal examination and provenance. So exciting! Read the full story here.
That’s all I have for you today, Deac families! Thanks as always for reading!
