Today is LDOC (Last Day of Classes). Your students are likely taking a collective sigh of relief – briefly! – and then will turn their full attention to studying for finals and completing final papers or group projects this weekend. Dr. Wente shared an LDOC video this morning, which I hope you will enjoy.
Saturday and Sunday are what we call Reading Days (i.e., days where no finals are scheduled and students are free to read/study for finals). Final exams begin Monday 12/9 and run through Saturday 12/14.
Note that all residential communities close on Sunday 12/15 at 2 p.m. for Winter Break (unless your student has been approved for Winter Break Housing).
Now to today’s news…
Tune in for Women’s Soccer tonight at 5 p.m., Men’s Soccer Sat. at 5 p.m.
Our #2 seeded women’s soccer team takes on #3 seeded Stanford at 5 p.m. tonight in the NCAA Tournament Semifinals. With a win, the Deacs will advance to the championship game and play the winner of the Duke and North Carolina matchup. You can tune in to ESPNU at 5 p.m. ET to watch the match live.
As for men’s soccer, our #8 ranked team plays on Saturday at 5 p.m. against the #1 Ohio Buckeyes. You can watch via ESPN.
Please watch them both and cheer hard! GO DEACS!
Join us for the Lovefeast on Sunday (in person or via livestream)
The Lovefeast will be held this Sunday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. in Wait Chapel. This annual candlelight service is one of my favorite Wake Forest traditions because it’s a beautiful way to get into the holiday spirit. It also gives students a much-needed study break before exams begin on Monday.
Following a tradition started by Wake Forest students in 1965, students, faculty, staff, and guests from the community gather for holiday carols and inspirational readings. When you enter the chapel, you are given a beeswax candle with a red fringe bottom (to catch the wax). During the service, we partake of a shared ‘meal’ of a sweetened bun (not unlike a hamburger roll in size and texture, but spiced with holiday spices like nutmeg) and sweetened coffee. We eat the communal meal together while holiday music fills the chapel. The highlight of the evening is when our Moravian candles are lit one-by-one, and the chapel is filled with the glow of candlelight and we all sing Joy to the World.
Lovefeast really is a special evening that Wake Foresters cherish, and your students won’t want to miss. Remind your Deacon that seating is limited. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the prelude begins at 6:40 p.m. Parents and families are invited to join in person of course, but we recognize most will be more able to remotely via the livestream at lovefeast.wfu.edu.
Parking info as students load up to move home (or leave their cars on campus)
My colleagues in Transportation and Parking Services posted an announcement page about parking rules during finals week (normal parking rules are in effect!), recommendations for students loading their vehicles as they prepare to go home, and where students should park their cars if the car will remain on campus for Winter Break. Read the full details here.
Wake on Break – tips from the OPCD (Office of Personal and Career Development)
My friends in the OPCD have created this great Wake on Break website to help guide students and families in activities that students can do during Winter Break to help them in their college-to-career journey:
“Winter break is the perfect time for your student to relax, refocus, and prepare for what’s ahead. With your encouragement, they can make the most of this time. Here are some tips to help them.”
The website shows seven activities that can be helpful for students, what you can do as parents/family members to assist and support your student, and has videos of webinars specific to different classes: first-year families, sophomore and junior families, and senior families.
This is a terrific suite of resources for you and your Deacs. Dig in and use them!
Good luck to all our Deacs as they prepare for finals. Remind your students to do their best, then let it rest 🙂
