Campus is growing more beautiful by the day. The fall leaves are coming in to all their colors: vibrant oranges and reds and yellows. You can see the treeline beginning to come into its fall glory via the Quad Cam:

If you haven’t already bookmarked the Quad Cam, you might want to do it, and check periodically over the next 2-3 weeks. Typically the very last part of October and first week or so of November is peak leaf season.

“To Autumn” by John Keats

Keeping with the fall theme…one of the greatest joys to alumni of a certain age was to hear the late and legendary Dr. Edwin G. Wilson (’43) read British Romantic Poetry, or Blake, Yeats, and Thomas in his classes. Dr. Wilson’s voice had a lovely, rich tone, the hint of an Eastern NC accent, and a wonderful, warm gentility.

Some years ago, Dr. Wilson recorded John Keats’ “To Autumn” and his words were set to the beautiful photography of Ken Bennett. If you have a couple of minutes, it’s worth a watch and a listen.

Fall Festival tomorrow; Barktoberfest on Friday

I happened to see that Student Union is bringing back our former Fall Festival. It will be tomorrow (Weds. 10/23) from 6-9 on Manchester Plaza:

“Are you ready for fall? We hope you are because we’re bringing back the annual tradition of Fall Festival! Celebrate this cozy season with us by coming over to Manchester Quad and enjoying great music, food, caricatures, and more fun. Mark this event on your calendar and bring your friends!”

And something called “Barktoberfest” definitely caught my eye. It is this Friday 10/25 from 1-2 p.m. in Tribble Courtyard:

“Woof Forest will be having dogs and puppies dressed in costume for Halloween! It is a required $2 donation to pet and play with the dogs, and all donations will go directly to Forsyth Humane Society, which is the animal shelter bringing the dogs to campus.”

Hope your Deacs can enjoy these – and other – events that are on The Link.

Students can vote early Oct. 17-Nov. 2 (same day registration available)

When I was on the Quad yesterday, I saw some volunteers asking students passing by if they had registered to vote. Yesterday, the Office of Civic and Community Engagement shared this message about One Stop Early Voting. It includes information about free shuttles to the Polo Park polling station, as well as what students need to vote early in NC:

  1. Check your voter registration status before heading out to vote.
  2. If you need to register or update your registration – bring a hard copy of your Proof of Residency with you.
  3. Bring your DeaconOne Card – North Carolina now requires an ID to vote, and your DeaconOne card is a valid form of ID.

Students with questions can stop by the Office of Civic & Community Engagement in Benson 506, or check out the non-partisan resources through TurboVote.

That’s all the news I have for you today, Deac families!
