I often say that Wake Forest is a big smorgasbord. There are so many events, activities, lectures, offices that provide support to students, etc. And it is wise to sample widely of that smorgasbord so that you get a taste of all that Wake has to offer, instead of having a limited range of experiences.
Here’s a sampling of some of the things happening next week that your Deacs might consider attending.
Haunted Tunnels (Mon.)
When I was here as a student, some of the tunnels beneath our buildings were open: my first year when I lived in Bostwick, we frequently used the tunnel to go over to Johnson hall, and it was a tradition for residents to paint the tunnel. It was a lot of fun.
While the tunnels are now closed, our creative students in the Anthony Aston Players do a Haunted Tunnels tour every Halloween, and their next one is coming up this Monday:
“Come join us for a deep sea submarine exploration of the haunted shipwreck of Captain Silverton. Explore under the tunnels in a haunting ocean experience!
Fun fact: Wake Forest University is built on top of a tunnel system, originally used for maintenance and heating. If you think old, abandoned tunnels sound creepy, then AAP’s annual Haunted Tunnels event, held in the tunnel between Babcock and Luter dorms in October, is the perfect event for you! Every year, we pick a new theme and transform the tunnel into a haunted house of sorts; an unmissable campus tradition!”
Here are a few of the pictures from past Haunted Tunnels. There are some more gory ones I left out; whoever does the costuming and makeup for these is to be commended!
Encourage your Deacs to come out and enjoy this Night of Fright!
Project Pumpkin (Tues.)
I hope many of your Deacs are going to be working directly with Project Pumpkin, our student-led Halloween carnival for local schoolchildren (and faculty kids – mine loved coming when they were little!)
Project Pumpkin is next Tuesday from 3-6 p.m. on the Quad. Even if your Deac doesn’t have a formal role, encourage them to put on a costume (or even just a silly hat or something) and join in the fun on the Quad. It’s such a great day and especially for our Deacs with younger siblings they miss, it is wonderful to get to experience the joy of very young kids showing off their Halloween costumes, trick or treating, and playing various games at the festival tables all over the Quad.
Conversations with an Elder (Tues.)
Charlotte Hill O’Neal, also known as Mama C, will participate in a public conversation on Tuesday, Oct. 29 from 5-6:30 in Pugh Auditorium:
“Mama C is an accomplished poet, musician, visual artist, filmmaker, lifelong teacher and founding director of Tanzania’s United African Alliance Community Center (UAACC), a community-based organization which promotes community development in rural Africa.”
One of our own Daily Deac readers commended the Mama C event to me (they said “Meeting Mama C is something you NEVER can forget”) and I wanted to be sure to share in case your students would like to go. See full details.
Edward Gorey exhibit (Weds.)
Do we have any fans of the Ghastly Crumb Tinies and the “whimsical and morbid” drawings of Edward Gorey? If so, ZSR is here to hook you up! There will be a 100 Years of Edward Gorey exhibit on Weds. Oct. 30 from 3:30-5 in ZSR Room 625:
“ZSR Special Collections and Archives’ Halloween event will feature a pop-up exhibit of Gorey books from our collection and a Gorey trivia quiz, as well as spooky snacks and giveaways.”
Halloween-Themed fitness classes (Thurs.)
For students who want to blend their workout with some extra Halloween fun, Campus Rec has them covered:
“Join many of our themed Halloween classes by coming in your favorite costume! Check out our Group Fitness Schedule for a large variety of offerings and be ready to dance, bike, or work out to some spooky sounds!”
Students can register for classes through the group fitness schedule link!”
Tie-Dye the Forest (Fri.)
Last but not least, Tie-Dye the Forest:
“First year students are invited to join Screamin’ Demons and the Traditions Council Friday, November 1st on lower Manchester Plaza to tie-dye their own Wake Forest shirt. Officially become a part of tie-dye nation and prepare for an exciting season of Wake Forest basketball by making your unique custom tie-dye.
WakerSpace will also be on site to show you ways to make your shirt even more special.”
That is not EVERYTHING that is happening next week, just a few things that caught my eye. Your Deacs can check out The Link to see upcoming events, and we also send students the Next Week at Wake: Student Edition e-newsletter every Friday afternoon, with a roundup of everything happening in the next week.
