Today is a Fall Weather kind of day. It is grey and cloudy, with occasional drizzle. The temperatures are cooler than we have seen all fall: today’s high is only 66. And I am here for the crisp and cool feel to the air! We have rain in the forecast for the next few days – which we desperately need, as it has been very dry – so encourage your Deacs to consult their weather app of choice before leaving their residence each day, lest they get caught without the appropriate rainwear.
Today I have a roundup of several upcoming events and notices. Dig in to what you need and scroll by anything you don’t 🙂
Family Weekend kickoff set for 3:30 p.m. (9/28)
Word hit my inbox late this afternoon that gametime for our Family Weekend football game has been set for 3:30 p.m. In my humble opinion, this is the best of all possible kickoff times because you don’t have to try and eat tailgate food for brunch and you’ll be finished with the game in time for a good dinner in town 🙂
Reminder, National Voter Registration Day is tomorrow (9/17)
Encourage your Deacs to visit Deacs Decide from 12-6 p.m. tomorrow (9/17) in the Tribble Courtyard for National Voter Registration Day so they can get ready for upcoming elections! Whether they need to register to vote, update their information, or just learn more about the process, Deacs Decide is there for your students.
Students can stop by (and ideally, bring a friend!) and make sure they are election-ready. Student voices matter, so make them count!
Students can check their voter registration and sign up for election reminders for wherever they are casting their ballot with TurboVote!
Career Fair (9/18) and Diversity Always Matters (9/17)
The OPCD (Office of Personal and Career Development) has two signature events coming up this week:
“Diversity Always Matters Tuesday, Sept 17 | 6:00 – 8:30 PM
Join students & employers in celebrating diversity! Network, learn, and explore opportunities with top organizations that value YOU. Open to all students, with a special focus on diverse backgrounds.
Fall Career Fair Wednesday, Sept 18 | 12:00 – 4:00 PM
Meet top employers looking for talent like YOU! Whether you know what you want or are exploring options, this is your chance to shine. Open to all class years & majors.”
Students can learn more and sign up via Handshake.
Fall Day of Service (9/21)
If your Deacs are trying to find some ways to engage meaningfully with other students and the community, our Day of Service this Saturday might be a great option. Here’s what they need to know:
“Interested in volunteer service but don’t know where to begin? Put Pro Humanitate into action and join us for a Day of Service, where you can help make a difference in your community by volunteering at various nonprofits throughout Winston-Salem. Check-in begins at 8:30 AM, with breakfast provided for all volunteers. Registration is required through GivePulse. Login using your WFU credentials.”
Club Sports livestreams
Many of our students are engaged in our Club Sports program, which is a terrific way to get to know other students around a shared love of a particular sport. I found out last week that there is a club sports live stream web page and that some of our sports can be viewed online.
My colleagues in Campus Rec wanted families to have accurate expectations about the livestreams. They tell me:
- The livestreams are not like typical TV broadcasts:
- We have a camera mounted on a tripod that follows the game ball, but we do not have a camera operator following the play or who can zoom in and out.
- There is no announcer (feel free to add your own color commentary!)
- Not all games will be streamed, as our staff cannot cover them all
So watch the ones you can, Deac families!
P’28s: Letters So Dear (for your ’28s) and weekly message (for you)
Our ’28 students got their weekly edition of Letters So Dear this morning. Parents and families, you can see the weekly message for new families; this week’s topic is about finding a mentor.
