It may be the end of a short week, but today I have a long list of news and announcements to share from various corners of the University. Let’s dig in!
Alumni Hall to be renovated for academic space
Yesterday in our WFU Should Know student e-newsletter, the following announcement appeared:
“Space in Alumni Hall will be renovated for academic use, bringing the departments of Philosophy, Education, and Computer Science and the Entrepreneurship program under one roof. They will occupy space vacated by University Advancement and University Marketing and Communications, which will move to the University Corporate Center. Read more about this project.”
This is an exciting update and illustrates our commitment to innovative spaces that support teaching and learning, faculty and student collaboration, and innovation. As we have more info, will bring it to you.
Healthy Habits message
Also in yesterday’s WFU Should Know was a message from the Campus Health Committee regarding healthy habits reminders and important updates for Fall 2024. It reads, in part, “As with any fall semester, we anticipate continuing to see routine upticks in respiratory illnesses this fall and winter. It is important to remain vigilant to minimize the spread of these illnesses within our community.”
The message encourages flu and COVID vaccines, good personal hygiene, avoiding others when sick, etc. You can read the entire message on the Campus Health website.
Question about registering for Family Weekend
I had a question from a family about whether they needed to register for Family Weekend if they wanted to come visit their daughter. I checked with our team who plans Family Weekend, and they wanted me to pass on the following; am sharing this because I suspect other families may have the same question:
“You are not required to register to visit your daughter during Family Weekend. However, registration will be necessary if you would like to participate in any of the scheduled events—such as “Snacks and Snaps with Res Life Staff,” the Parent/Family Mixer, the Student Tailgate, or the live edition of the Daily Deac. Additionally, registering helps us ensure we know who is on campus as part of our enhanced risk management processes.”
If you have not yet registered for Family Weekend but want to do so, you can register here.
Family Weekend registration refund and t-shirt sale deadlines: Sept 8
There is also an important Family Weekend message that is being sent out today to all families who have registered for the event, and it is about deadlines for refunds and t-shirt sales. Here is an excerpt:
“This is a friendly reminder that the deadline to request a refund for the weekend registration or any optional items you may have purchased (such as meal tickets, t-shirts, etc.) is fast approaching. Refund Deadline: Sunday, September 8th at 11:59 pm. If you find that you need to make changes to your Family Weekend plans, kindly ensure that you submit your refund request before the deadline….
In addition, please note that preorders for Family Weekend t-shirts will end at 11:59 on Sunday, September 8.“
Important Mold & Mildew Prevention and Fire/Life Safety Info
Resident students received this message on Wednesday about mold and mildew prevention and fire/life safety info. The message contains important tips for how to prevent mold and mildew, which might be especially helpful for our new students who are living on their own for the first time.
P’28s, please complete our Orientation survey!
This is a friendly reminder to our P’28s who participated in move-in and/or Family Orientation: please provide your feedback on our Orientation survey. We really do read every bit of feedback and look to it as we plan future Orientations. Thank you!
September is National Recovery Month
I met recently with our new Assistant Director for Wellbeing who works with substance abuse, and learned a new fact: September is National Recovery Month. [Full disclosure: I have some family members who would likely not still be with us if it were not for recovery programs, so this hits home.] So I wanted to share this info below:
“National Recovery Month (aka Recovery Month) is a national observance held every September since 1989 to promote and support the recovery community and the dedication of service providers and communities who make recovery in all its forms possible. The Office of Wellbeing has a space to support students with recovery; learn more about the Collegiate Recovery Community (CRC).”
That’s it for our Friday jambalaya. Remember that Friday afternoons/early evenings are always a great time to call your Deac 🙂
