In this Issue: today we talk about the process to submit academic accommodation requests (hint: summer is an ideal time to do this!!)
Some of our students have disabilities for which academic accommodations are appropriate, and there is a process for students to submit accommodation requests. That process can be most efficiently done over the summer, because it’s one less thing your students need to do after school starts. You’d be surprised how busy they get even in the first week.
Here’s how the process works:
The student submits their documentation to CLASS (Center for Learning, Access, and Student Success) and a staff member reviews it
CLASS reviews the student’s documentation, then emails the student (at their WFU email) asking them to schedule a time to meet with a CLASS staff member via Zoom
Once the day/time is agreed upon,CLASS sends the student an email and a calendar invite (both at WFU email) with the Zoom link
During the Zoom meeting, CLASS shares the accommodation request outcome(s) and answers questions the student may have
Once the fall semester begins, students can elect to share their accommodation letters with their professors (the system is set up for students to initiate the process, then the letter comes from a CLASS staff member)
If this applies to your student, encourage them to submit their accommodation request over the summer, and to check their WFU email frequently and following any instructions CLASS provides them.
One final pro tip: sometimes students who had accommodations in high school want to try college without them, and then they find themselves mid-semester wishing they had gotten the accommodations from the get-go. If your student is in that boat, encourage them to request accommodations this summer. It is so much easier to do proactively rather than reactively.
Want to learn more about learning accommodations and on campus academic resources?
Join CLASS (Center for Learning, Access, and Student Success) Director Dr. Michael Shuman on July 17 and 31 at 6 p.m. for an informal question and answer virtual session. Dr. Shuman will review the academic accommodations process and answer any questions you may have. He will also outline tutoring and academic coaching options available to all students.
Information about how to register for these sessions will be available closer to July, but save time on your calendars now if you are interested.
