As a mom who just had her student home for Fall Break, I was undeniably happy to see him for a couple of days. But I also want to honor the fact that for some students, getting home for Fall Break may be a complicated/overlong travel process, and staying on campus for Fall Break can provide a wonderful opportunity to get some rest and relaxation without the hassle of travel.
If your Deacs are traveling home, may they have safe travels. For those staying with us, here are a couple of things to ponder.
For students staying here for Fall Break: take a walk!
For students staying on campus for Fall Break, they may be wanting to catch up on their sleep, bingewatch their favorite series, and just chill. But the weather looks great for tomorrow and Friday (Saturday is projected to rain), so I hope they take a little time to enjoy the outdoors.
For a quick 30 minute walk, just to get out and stretch their legs, your students can make a couple of loops around campus. But if they have a little more time, a gorgeous walk would be to go down past Winston Hall to the entrance to Reynolda Gardens and take the path all the way up to Reynolda Village and Reynolda House. I’d encourage your Deacs to walk slowly, thoughtfully, really looking at what they see and hear and smell. And have some time to be alone with their thoughts. Sometimes a meditative walk – not for exercise or burning calories, but just to appreciate the beauty of nature around us – can be an enormous blessing to the spirit.
Fall Break hours of operation
Also for those staying here for the break, the Fall Break Hours of Operation website provides a list of schedules for frequently-accessed services and building hours. I always advise planning ahead and making sure your needs are covered and you know what is open when.
Insomnia Cookies opens this week!
I get an enewsletter called WS Today, which brings local news to my inbox (you/your Deacs can subscribe here). In one of this week’s emails, I discovered this little gem:
“Insomnia Cookies will open its doors for the first time in Winston-Salem during its ribbon cutting Thursday, Oct. 12. at 706 N. Trade St. Enjoy networking, giveaways, and cookies during the grand opening of the store from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.”
My ’27 at NC State has told me all about the wonders of Insomnia Cookies, so I imagine this might be an attractive new offering for Wake students too. At minimum, students here for Fall Break could go down tomorrow to check it out and maybe grab some free cookies or swag.
Reminder: flu shots available Oct. 17
Reminder to all families that there are additional free, walk-up flu clinics coming up:
- October 17: 4–6 p.m., Benson University Center
- October 26: 5–7 p.m., ZSR Library
Shots can also be arranged through the Student Health Service clinic.
Wishing all our Deacs a safe, happy, healthy, and restorative Fall Break!
