Homecoming recap (initial)

This past weekend was our Homecoming, and it was a great one, despite a storm rolling in right about the time Party So Dear, our major Friday afternoon Homecoming gathering, was getting underway. There was thunder and lightning, a pummeling rain that my late father would have called a “frog choker,” and we even got pelted with hail. And then the heavens parted and we had a beautiful rest of the night and rest of the weekend.

If your Deacs got up early on Saturday, they could join in the Festival on the Quad, which is a carnival for Wake Foresters of all ages: students, alumni, families. It was beautiful weather and a ton of fun: music, food, giveaways, games, and more. Here’s a pic of the Quad below (click to enlarge).

Wake Forest alumni attend the Festival on the Quad during Homecoming 2023, on Hearn Plaza on Saturday, October 21, 2023.

What. An. Ending – our Homecoming game

And then – our football game. I can’t do justice to the last few minutes of the game – nor my emotions – but here is a snippet from the story on godeacs.com:

“Following a touchdown connection from redshirt sophomore quarterback Santino Marucci to redshirt junior Cameron Hite with just seven seconds remaining, Wake Forest football earned a comeback 21-17 victory over Pitt to earn its first ACC win of the season on Homecoming Weekend.”

You can read the full story here. I am not sure my heart has fully restarted after the incredible tension and then amazing jubilation as those last 7 seconds ticked off the clock.

P’27s: Weekly Message, Letters So Dear

In our regularly scheduled Daily Deac content, each Monday we publish a new Weekly Message for first-year families; this week’s subject is thoughts on registration. And your ’27s got their issue of Letters So Dear.

Project Pumpkin is tomorrow (Tuesday)

One of the happiest days of the fall is tomorrow because it is Project Pumpkin, our signature Halloween carnival and trick-or-treat event for local children. You can follow along on the Project Pumpkin Instagram account; here’s what they shared just a little while ago:

“TOMORROW! 3-6PM! Join us on the upper quad for our annual Project Pumpkin event. Come dressed in your favorite halloween costume and help us connect with the Winston-Salem community. Swipe for some costume inspiration, see you all there!”

Even if your students didn’t formally volunteer with Project Pumpkin, they should go to the Quad and take part in this happy experience. And you can read more about Project Pumpkin here.

Pizza with the Police this Thursday

Students are invited to join University Police for Pizza with the Police on Thursday, October 26 from 1-4 p.m. on Manchester Plaza. All faculty, staff and students are welcome.

That’s all I’ve got for you, Deac families, other than to say the 5 day forecast predicts a beautiful week ahead. May your Deacs enjoy every minute.

Beautiful fall forecast 10/24-28/23
