Today feels like all good vibes. It’s a beautiful day outside: blue sky, cool morning, high of 75, some of the leaves starting to turn red. It’s almost the weekend, and I know our students are looking forward to the break. Many have (or are about to have) midterms, so they will be happy to have the weekend to let of a little steam.
Here’s a few things that I thought families might like to know today:
Walk with Wente – see what our faculty are working on
If you are not a faculty member (or if, like me, your undergrad days are a long way in the rear view mirror), some of the work faculty do may feel hard to grasp, because so much of it is done in the lab or the library with people who have very specialized knowledge.
Happily, President Wente has launched “Walk with Wente,” a new video series. In episode one, she walks and talks with Kristen Beavers of the Health and Exercise Science department about Dr. Beavers’ work in preventative health, her passion for being a mentor, and involving students in research.
It’s a short view but really interesting to take a peek into our scholarly activities. Enjoy!
Spring housing informational emails – for both current students and those studying abroad this semester
The Office of Residence Life and Housing sent messages yesterday to students:
- This message was sent to students who are on campus during Fall 2023; it explains the requirement to declare housing intent for the Spring 2024 semester, as well as the room change request process for spring, pulling in students who are abroad in the fall, and the off-campus housing lottery.
- This message was sent to students who are abroad/not on campus during Fall 2023; it explains the process of housing selection for the Spring 2024 semester.
Particularly if your Deac is abroad this fall (or is taking the fall off and will return in the spring), be sure they are on top of the details about selecting housing.
Back by popular demand: Humans vs. Zombies
I was super excited to see this announcement:
“Humans vs. Zombies is BACK! Join the ZSR Library for this epic event on Friday, Oct. 6th from 7-9 p.m. (No Nerf blasters, no bag check, so just bring yourself and your WFU ID and be ready to escape from the zombie horde!)
This is such a fun event. Encourage your Deacs (esp. first-years who might still be trying to find their people), to give H v Z a try next weekend. Some very old archive pics below to give you a sense of the fun 🙂
What if your student has a facilities issue? How do they report it?
I got a great question the other day asking how students report a facilities need (like their overhead light burned out, etc.) The quickest and fastest way to get a repair is for your student to submit a facilities work order. This page has lots of great residential help links; please encourage your students to bookmark it.
And help coach your student that when they have a need for a repair to their room, it behooves them to do that work themselves (vs. emailing their RA about it and asking the RA to take care of it). It will be way easier and quicker to cut out the middleman and report it themselves. Also, their RA may be in class, have a looming test, or won’t be looking at their email for several hours and may not be able to report it quickly.
Shuttle Schedule on the Passio GO app
Students can now download the Passio GO app to their smartphones to view shuttle arrival times and locations in real time. The app is free to download from the Google Play or App Store and replaces the TransLoc Rider app. Download » qrco.de
