We’re at the end of the week: not Friday, but Fri-YAY! Hopefully your students can head outside and enjoy the wonderful (and slightly cooler) afternoon we’re having. Looks like we are in for a rainy weekend (but cooler temps).
The news of the day is below. Take what you need and scroll past anything that doesn’t apply 🙂
Community safety alerts
We had a couple of community safety messages early this morning. The first message was to alert that there was a police presence off campus near Brookwood Road and University Parkway. An update was issued later in the morning to alert that the police presence had cleared.
As a reminder, we no longer send safety advisories to families via email. Those are all generated via the Wake Safe app. If you wish to receive notifications, please follow the instructions on this page to get Wake Safe and enable notifications on your cell phone.
WFU vs Vanderbilt football – 11 a.m. kickoff tomorrow
We have an early kickoff for the football game tomorrow: 11 a.m. Right now the forecast calls for rain, so students should dress accordingly (good news is that the temperature will be much more fall-like!)
Our Athletics office provides complimentary transportation for every home game to ensure all students have a safe and easy option to get from campus to Allegacy Stadium. Student shuttles will start running three and a half hours prior to the game with pickup locations on campus in Lot P behind Wait Chapel and Poteat Residence Hall. The pickup and drop off location at Allegacy Stadium is located behind the Wake Forest indoor tennis center on Shorefair Drive.
The free DEACTOWN Student Tailgate is back and is located in a revamped space behind the East stands of Allegacy Stadium. The tailgate was developed in partnership with student leaders, faculty, and staff from across campus. The space will open for students three hours prior to kickoff, where they will enjoy an elevated tailgate experience featuring a stage with live music and a large video screen to watch games from around the country. Additionally, free food opportunities will be available from local food trucks for students while supplies last, while additional food will be available for purchase.
A reminder that there is a clear bag policy in place for games:
- Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC and do not exceed 12” x 6” x 12”
- One gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar)
- Small clutch bags, approximately the size of a hand or 6.5” x 4.5” with or without a handle or strap, may be carried into the stadium along with one of the clear bag options
- An exception will be made for medically necessary items after proper inspection at the gate
- All bags are subject to search
More info about gameday operations can be found here.

We Are Wake (WE)’s 336.758.CARE referral line
At the start of the semester, the University launched the 336.758.CARE (2273) referral line, a 24/7 consultation line for Wake Forest community members (or families!) who are seeking support for a student’s mental health and wellbeing.
Staff responding to the calls will assess concerns, provide supportive strategies for next steps, make appropriate referrals and connect students to necessary resources. There is also an online referral form if you prefer to submit a referral that way.
336.758.CARE is connected to the We are Wake initiative, which launched in Spring 2023. To learn more, visit we.wfu.edu.
Just for fun: what was the #1 song on September 8th when you were 18 years old?
I have always loved late Friday afternoons on campus. Not because my work week is almost over 🙂 but because there is a special energy on campus when you know you are finished with class for the week and can have some well-deserved downtime.
So I thought it would be fun to look back and see what the #1 song was in the US on September 8, 1988, the year I started college. For all you Class of 1992 grads/people born in 1970 out there, I am pleased to present you with one of my favorite songs, Guns ‘N Roses “Sweet Child o’ Mine.”
If you want to figure out what song was popular on this date when you were 18, you can enter September 8 of whatever year you were born on this website. We might all enjoy a little Blast from Our Past 🙂
Have a great weekend, Daily Deacdom! And since it’s Friday, think about calling your Deacs.
