We hope that our Deac families in FL and in the path of Idalia are faring OK. You remain on our minds and in our hearts.
Weather has been grey and threatening to rain today, but so far no rain yet. There is a potential for some a little later, which I hope doesn’t come to pass, because we have some really fun stuff planned for this evening and tomorrow. Read on!
Wake the Demons pep rally tonight at 9 p.m. and opening game Thursday
Tonight is a big night on campus with lots of fun stuff. We will be having a Wake the Demons Pep Rally tonight at 9 p.m. on Hearn Plaza (aka the Quad). I am told that “All students are welcome on the Quad as we introduce the Class of 2027 to gameday traditions with our cheer and dance teams and the Spirit of Old Gold & Black.” It looks like there will be some special welcomes from campus leaders and our traditional night-before-home-football-game dynamic fireworks display over Wait Chapel!
This is a good reminder that the fireworks display has become a campus tradition – so your Deacs should expect to hear some noise around 10 p.m.
In addition to all the festivities, I am told there will be free “We Are Wake” t-shirts provided tonight to raise awareness of student care and wellbeing on our campus. First-year students are encouraged to wear these shirts during the “Deacon Dash” – when the new students run onto the field at the game tomorrow; new students should meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Deacon Dash banner. See these signs that are displayed on the South side of campus near Tribble Hall (click to enlarge).
There’s also a First Year tailgate tomorrow, and free shuttles to the stadium starting at 3:30 p.m. (departing from parking lot P on campus to Gate 4 at the stadium). If your student has not already downloaded the Screamin’ Demon Rewards App, encourage them to do so. There is nothing more exciting than Division I and specifically ACC sports!
Move-in Photostory
If you want to relive the first-year move-in experience, my talented colleagues have put together this photostory for you.
This has a really comprehensive look at some of our Pre-Orientation programs, the sessions for families, fun events like Humans vs. Zombies at the ZSR Library (a favorite), game night, and much more.
I am still trying to collect slide shows from Orientation, but will post them once I think they are all in. Thank you for your patience.
Free Wellbeing Coaching
I got a ping from my colleagues in the Office of Wellbeing, who asked me to share with families that they are now enrolling for their Wellbeing Coaching program, which is free for students (as well as staff and faculty). Here’s the scoop:
“Clients will work one-on-one with a certified coach to identify their individual health and wellbeing goals, and then co-create a plan to achieve those goals and make them stick. Sessions are bi-weekly for the semester, or on a drop-in basis, and a variety of times are available. Goals can vary widely and can include anything from increasing sleep or managing stress, to developing a mindfulness practice or pursuing financial goals. Students can find out more and register at go.wfu.edu/wellbeingcoaching.”
How students can get involved with the OCCE (Office of Civic and Community Engagement)
I am on a number of distro lists on campus, and one of them is for the OCCE (Office of Civic and Community Engagement). OCCE does incredible work on campus and within our larger community. They sponsor beloved on-campus traditions like Hit the Bricks, Project Pumpkin, and our Wake N Shake dance marathon, do election and voting work with Deacs Decide, work with Campus Kitchen to help provide meals to people in the larger community, and much more. If your Deacs want to get involved, they can see more in this email, or visit the OCCE website.
That’s all I’ve got for you today. GO DEACS!
