We’re coming down to the wire as we get ready to greet our new and returning students. Lots of preparations happening on campus, so we’ll get straight to the news today.
Severe weather alerts yesterday
Yesterday afternoon, there were two campuswide alerts issued for bad weather. You may have seen some reports on TV of trees coming down (I saw some video from Mooresville, NC, about an hour’s drive southwest of us). I live 3 miles from campus, and we got a lot of rain and wind, but nothing too bad.
Some of our students who are at home for the summer might be wondering why they were getting Wake Alert messages over the summer. The reason is, we have no idea where students are: they could be at their permanent home, they could be in summer school here, or working an internship in town, or visiting friends who are here, etc. So better safe than sorry, which is why we cast a wide net with alerts.
Have a conversation about consent (all families)
I’ve mentioned this a couple times, but just wanted to remind all families that we encourage you to have a conversation with your student about consent before school begins. Some of my colleagues have prepared this excellent Consent Conversation Guide to help you get started.
WFU faculty member on CNN this weekend
One of our faculty members, Christian Waugh of psychology, gave an interview with CNN This Morning Weekend about how big summer events, like concerts and movies, can help people cope with stress and feel like they belong. Thought you might enjoy seeing it; watch here.
Weekly Message for New Families
It’s Tuesday, which means we have a new weekly message for our new families. Our P’27s and transfer families can read it here.
Another ‘grab tissues’ article about the move-in goodbye
One of my Wake faculty friends – who was a WFU parent herself! – sent me a link to this article from The Washington Post about the process of saying goodbye as you send your student to college. I am an easy crier, so that is a low bar to cross, but you might want a tissue as you read 🙂
