Happy Friday, Deac families! Only a couple short weeks left until move-in starts. I do not know where the summer has gone.
Fraternity/sorority webinar link
Our Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life hosted a webinar last night for students and/or families interested in learning more about the recruitment process. If you missed it and want to watch the webinar, you can do it here.
If you received an email from WFU today with the subject line “Important communication about compliance with a WFU Policy”
Today, some families received an email with the subject line above. The email began with “Today, your student received an important communication from Wake Forest regarding compliance with a University policy.”
If you received this message, please ask your student to check their WFU email (including their spam/junk/promotions folder, just in case it got routed there in error) and look for the message. Then they will need to follow any instructions in the message to come into compliance.
Because of student privacy issues and FERPA, administrators are not able to respond to families who ask “what policy is this?” without first verifying with the Registrar that your student has granted you Proxy Access for us to speak to you about their WFU experience. There are enough families who got this email that I will not be able to check with the Registrar’s office about their Proxy Access for every student. So the quickest way for your student to get to the bottom of this issue is to check their inbox (and spam/junk/quarantine/promotions) for an email that went to their WFU email this afternoon about compliance and/or actions they need to take.
FERPA is not Wake’s rule, by the way; it is a federal law. And even though we are sending Wake students an email from Wake administrators, sometimes they land in spam/junk/promotions, etc. So please ask them to do a thorough check. I appreciate your patience and understanding.
Wait Chapel steeple refurbishment
I get all kinds of emails about things happening on campus. This was one that might be of interest to families, as this will be quite visible if you are here to help move your student in:
“Refurbishment of the Wait Chapel steeple will begin on Monday, August 7. The work is expected to take approximately six weeks. During this time, access around the steeple side of the Chapel will be limited. Facilities will be using a 135-foot lift and a rigging system at the steeple level. For your protection, do not cross barricades or enter into the work area.”
For those who won’t be on campus to see it, but are interested in the process, my hope is that you might be able to see the action via the Quad Cam.
How your students can find out about campus events
One of the questions that families of both new and returning students may be asking themselves is “how do students find out about events and activities taking place on campus?”
We encourage all students to download the Corq app:
“Stay connected to what’s happening. Download the Corq app for campus event information and touchless check-in (for events with a required RSVP). Available at the Apple Store and Google Play.
Once you download the app and select Wake Forest as your campus, sign in with your WFU gmail account to view and register for student-only events.”
Students are also encouraged to use The Link, our Student Engagement platform:
“The Link is a tool for campus connection. There are lots of ways to get involved on The Link, including joining student organizations, attending events, and engaging in campus traditions! To find out more, check in with one of our Engagement Consultants and be sure to ask what kind of involvement perks you can earn!”
I also want to put a plug in – for families of all years – for the Student Involvement Fair, which will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 5th from 3:30-6 p.m. on Poteat Field. At this event, the 200+ student organizations on campus will have displays about their organization, and students can sign up to be on the distro list/group chat/whatever they are using to communicate about that organization’s events and activities. I’ll have more on that closer to Sept. 5th, but encourage your Deacs to make it a priority to attend it in person if they can.
Dig in at the Campus Garden, August 27
While a lot of the campus activities I mentioned in the previous item may not get built out in the Corq app or The Link until students get here, there are already some activities listed. For students interested in sustainability, the outdoors, gardening, etc., the Dig in at the Campus Garden might be a great activity:
“The Wake Forest Campus Garden is all about growth. In addition to the organic produce it supplies to the community, the garden is also a place for growing knowledge, skills, and relationships. Come see what the Campus Garden is all about with tours, hands-on activities, and free food.
We’ll meet on Hearn Plaza (upper quad) in front of Wait Chapel and walk together to the garden (~10 minute walk), where you’ll get a chance to meet our student leaders, get your hands dirty in the garden, and learn about the wide range of ways in which sustainability will be part of your life as a Demon Deacon. The Wake Forest Office of Sustainability is a place where every student can find their niche and be part of a warm, welcoming community.
Food will be provided and all students are welcome. If you need special accommodations, please email sustainability@wfu.edu.”
- Sunday, August 27 at 4:00pm to 5:30pm
- Meet on Hearn Plaza (Upper Quad) in front of Wait Chapel
To close out the blog for a week, wanted to share a clarification. Yesterday, I got a very understandable question from a Daily Deac-er asking what is “Wolfpack ’27” and were they missing something? That’s my bad – my kiddo is about to start at NC State, and their mascot is the Wolfpack. So I am referring to my first-year student as Wolfpack ’27.
Have a great weekend, Deac families!
