It’s the first Friday of the fall semester! Though classes don’t start until Monday, our sophomores-seniors are returning to campus starting today. We are so happy to have them all back with us.
Our new P’27 and transfer families might be having some pangs as they depart campus and head back home. While it is hard to leave your students (trust me, I ugly cried when I left mine!), have faith that you are leaving them in a good place with lots of support.
Last call for tuition insurance
Because classes start on Monday the 28th, the 27th is the final day for you to sign up for elective tuition insurance if you want it. You can visit the tuition insurance website for more info.
Please note that there is no financial incentive to the University for students to enroll in the program. We just want to share out the opportunity for peace of mind to those who could benefit.
Every family will make the decision that is right for them; some of us are the ‘buy extra insurance’ types and others are not, and that is totally fine. Our ’27’s school does not offer tuition insurance through the school, but we bought it on our own (just because I am one of those Worst Case Scenario thinkers and know I could not absorb the loss of tuition if my student got injured and couldn’t stay in school). We just want to make sure families know this is available if they want it.
Last call for Family Weekend football tickets
My friends in Athletics have let me know that less than 200 seats are available for the Family Weekend football game vs Georgia Tech:
“We are anticipating a SELL OUT announcement next Monday, August 28th. The Athletic Department has opened seats at the top of the student section to allow for more families to attend before the game is SOLD OUT. To purchase, please visit the Athletics website to select your seats and parking today.
NOTE: if your student wants to sit with you, you will need to purchase a separate ticket for them.
- To inquire about very limited PREMIUM SEATING OPTIONS, call the ticket office at 336-758-3322 ext 1 or email hobanj@wfu.edu.
- The Demon Deacons will face off against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Saturday, September 23.
- We will know kickoff time about 10 days before the game (due to the potential for television scheduling).”
There are few things more fun than a college football game, and our Demon Deacons are an amazing team to watch. We offer an exceptional fan experience, and we hope you’ll grab your tickets now while you still can!
The Link is the place your students should go for event info
Now that students are coming back, it means there will be a whole host of student events taking place. Your students should bookmark/favorite The Link website, which is a central gathering place for student events.
Save the date for Student Involvement Fair (9/5)
I also want to put a plug in for the Student Involvement Fair, which will be held on September 5th on Poteat Field. The Student Involvement Fair is a wonderful way for students to get involved with campus clubs, intramurals, student organizations, etc.
The various organizations will set up tables on Poteat Field with displays of what their group is all about, and students can sign up to get on the distro list/group chat etc. to join that group.
I always encourage students to take a reconnaissance lap to see what is offered, so you don’t sign up for too much at once (and then not get involved in anything). More to come closer to September 5th.
Did you know these products were created in NC?
We’ll close today on a light note with a little trivia. Some of you told me how much you enjoyed reading the history of our iconic Reynolds building downtown (the one that looks like the Empire State building). That came from a new local e-newsletter, WSToday. They ran an item this week about products made in NC:
“Since North Carolina became a state in 1789, it’s cranked out some pretty noteworthy items. Some, like the Shibumi Beach Shade + The Nugget, are newer innovations, but others — like Krispy Kreme + the barcode — are so iconic they enjoy national acclaim.
Let’s explore the timeline of NC’s most famous products, shall we?
Cheerwine
- This cherry-flavored soda was born in the basement of Salisbury entrepreneur Lewis D. Peeler in 1917. Its name is derived from “cheer” (for pleasure) and “wine” (for its deep red hue). Pro tip: NC-based chains Biscuitville + Cookout serve Cheerwine at their locations. The annual Cheerwine Festival takes place in downtown Salisbury each May.
Krispy Kreme
- Folks have been chowing down on Krispy Kreme’s fluffy, yeast-based doughnuts since Vernon Rudolph concocted them for his small, Old Salem-based coffeeshop in 1937. They’re so beloved, there’s even an annual Krispy Kreme Challenge in Raleigh that challenges runners to eat 12 doughnuts over the course of 5 miles in just 1 hour.”

Have a great weekend, Daily Deacdom. The fun is just starting!
