It continues to be HHH here (hazy, hot, and humid), and the forecast looks pretty beastly Thursday through Monday (92-95 degrees). For Deacs who are here for Summer Session II, remember to hydrate and stay in the AC whenever you can. I know there are lots of places in the US that have even worse heat right now – stay cool, Daily Deacdom.
At the risk of making a “hot off the presses” joke during this heat, here’s the news I have for you today 🙂
Important ’27 Housing Assignment Message
FYI for our P’27s: the Office of Residence Life and Housing sent this message to first-year students about housing assignments. Important excerpt:
“It has come to our attention that some incoming students were able to see tentative housing assignments in WIN and/or begin completing their Roommate Agreements in our Housing Portal. We are working with our colleagues to ensure this information is only visible once we finalize and release assignments.
Please know that these assignments are tentative and subject to change as our team is still working diligently to get every new Deac assigned. Additionally, as we work to manage occupancy and maximize the student experience, building and room assignments are subject to change prior to move-in. If your assignment is changed, you will receive a notification from our assignments team.
Assignments should not be treated as final until released by our office towards the end of July.”
We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding. I also want to share some food for thought from the same message on how to approach your student’s assignment (once it is formally released).
- Trust the process. You were matched based on your answers to the Housing and Dining application, which speak to presumptive compatibility
- Understand that your roommate may be different from you in some way – and that’s OK! You don’t have to be best friends, you just have to peaceably share the same space
- Don’t put too much weight on social media – we all have things on our social media accounts that might not be representative. Spend your energy getting to know your new roommate instead
- Understand that your assignment will not change (either to a new hall or a new roommate), so please do not ask Residence Life and Housing for changes.
Pre-Wall Street information session for ’27s and P’27s
This hit my inbox a couple of days ago and I wanted to share it with interested P’27 families:
“Families and students of the Class of 2027 are invited to attend an information session on August 3rd at 5 pm via Zoom to learn more about the Pre-Wall Street Career track. The track is open to first-year students interested in exploring a career in the financial industry.
The Pre‐Wall Street Career Track provides early and focused professional preparation for qualified Wake Forest students intending to pursue careers in Investment Banking, Asset Management, Sales & Trading, and Private Equity on a global basis.
Please join us by registering for the Zoom call to learn more about the opportunities via the track. The session will be recorded and provided upon request for families who cannot attend.
For questions or to request the recording, contact Program Director, Marty Malloy (malloym@wfu.edu).”
Vehicle Registration info
I have received some questions from incoming families about whether or not their student needs a car. I did not have mine my first year at Wake (largely because my father had great fears of me being a chauffeur for all my friends) and I did fine without a car. Our Transportation and Parking Services has a great resource showing our various modes of transportation for those without cars on campus. (Your Deacs might need to be logged in to their WFU google account to see it, I’m not sure though).
For those who do want to bring a vehicle to campus, please note the following vehicle registration info (dates vary by student classification):
- First year student vehicle registration will begin Tuesday, August 1 at 9:00 a.m. To register your vehicle, visit the WFU Parking Portal. This website is also a great place to find information about parking during certain events like Thanksgiving, Winter Break or Spring Break.
- If you have a transfer student who is a sophomore, junior, or senior, you will find vehicle registration information here.
ZSR Library E-newsletter
When I first joined Wake in 1999 and was very green in my job, I once lamented to one of my colleagues (who was like an elder statesman of the office) about all the construction projects taking place over the summer, and that I disliked seeing all the construction fencing, etc. He very sagely said to me “construction projects are a sign of a healthy institution. If a college isn’t building or renovating in the summer, that’s a bad sign.”
For those of you with Deacs on campus for Summer Session I or II, they will have seen many construction projects taking place, not the least of which is in my beloved ZSR Library. I just received the ZSR e-newsletter in my inbox, and wanted to share the link with those who might enjoy it. You can learn more about their summer improvement projects, and also their “More than a Library” podcast, among other things.
