Resources on how to help students learn to prepare for medical appointments

One of the big adjustments for students – either when they start college, or they turn 18 – is navigating medical appointments on their own. For many parents and loved ones, we have been scheduling our kids’ doctors appointments, sitting in on them, and serving as the ‘catch all’ to share any symptoms that our kids might have forgotten to mention to the doctor. Or maybe that is just me 😉

There is an 18 minute NPR podcast about how to find medical providers and how to make the most of the visit: how to prep beforehand, what information you should come to the appointment with re: your symptoms, family history, etc. This might be something worth sharing with your Deacs.

The work of finding a doctor will already be done for your Deacs, as we have a comprehensive Student Health Service on campus. But there is good information in this podcast about how to track symptoms, what you should be sharing with your medical provider, how to ask follow up questions when you don’t understand something your provider tells you, etc. There’s even a role play that helps illustrate how to navigate an appointment and advocating for your needs.

Whether your Deacs need to seek healthcare for illnesses they have during the schoolyear, or simply want to understand how to prep for Life After Graduation, this podcast might help them navigate the healthcare system more confidently.
