The last three days of class are here, hard as that is for me to believe. It’s a little chillier than normal – mid 60s, instead of mid 70s, but still sunny and beautiful. Time for your Deacs to dig in and power to the finish!

LDOC is Wednesday; finals begin Friday 4/28; move-out info

This is the last week of class – well, not even a week: classes end on Wednesday the 26th. Finals begin this Friday, 4/28. Depending on your student’s date of finals, and when they have scheduled their check-out time from their residence hall, will depend on how early they can depart campus.

The absolute deadlines for move-out were shared in a message that the Office of Residence Life and Housing sent to students today:

  • May 6 – Residential communities close at 2 PM for all residents not approved for Interim Housing or those involved in Commencement.
  • May 15 – Residential communities close for all residents not approved for continued Interim Housing at 7 PM.

P’23s, note that May 15th is Commencement day, and your Deacs will be graduating through 12 or 12:30 p.m. (and then there are normally a ton of ‘last pictures with friends’ and other family photos, so they will could linger on the Quad until 1-2 p.m. Therefore, it will be important for seniors to have done the bulk of their packing/cleaning/etc. before Commencement day.

For all students, graduating or not, it will be important for them to have a plan for packing and moving. You may want to remind them that they need to be thinking about this (and scheduling their move out time by Weds. 4/26), but as we always advise, let them come up with the plan and associated details.

Outdoor wifi info

One of the most notable features of our campus is its natural beauty. Another less visible feature is the excellent outdoor wireless coverage, enabling our community to “opt outside” for work and relaxation. For any Deacs who want to study outdoors during this last week of class (or as finals approach), they can connect to WFUWireless with their WFU credentials for the fastest experience. This IS service desk article has a helpful outdoor wireless coverage map and more information.

Letters So Dear for ’26s

Today our ’26 students received their issue of Letters So Dear.

Public Health AmeriCorps – an inspiring story

There is a terrific and inspiring story on our News site about students who are part of Public Health AmeriCorps. Public Health AmeriCorps grew out of the immediate response to the pandemic. It’s a historic partnership between AmeriCorps and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Wake Forest was selected to be part of the first wave of nationwide grantees. We are one of two North Carolina-based higher education institutions in the inaugural cohort.

We have 14 Public Health AmeriCorps participants who are serving at host sites in Forsyth County. These students must complete 900 hours over a year. Here’s a taste of the larger news story:

“Just a few miles away in a church near downtown Winston-Salem, Wake Forest senior and Public Health AmeriCorps volunteer Danielle Jefferson works with the Twin City Harm Reduction Collective answering calls for help from community members who are struggling with drug addictions and substance abuse.

As she puts together naloxone kits, she pauses to check on supply levels for an upcoming mobile event in the community.

Like many states across the country, North Carolina isn’t immune to the opioid epidemic and drug overdoses.  More than 4,000 people died from a drug overdose in 2021, according to North Carolina health officials. This is the highest number of overdose deaths in a single year on record in the state.”

You can read the full story here, and I hope you will. It’s really inspiring what these students are doing. If your Deac is interested in a career in healthcare (either on the provider side or the policy side) or with community organizations, this could be a program they want to look into.
