Today is a gorgeous day on campus – around 80 degrees and sunny. And our students are here for that kind of gorgeous weather! It’s a busy day for me so we’ll get right to it.
Incredible Face to Face speaker lineup for 2023-24
Last night we had the dynamo that is singer and actor Kristin Chenoweth at our Face to Face Speaker Forum. I want to give a shout out to Leadership and Character Program scholars and seniors Ian Davis-Huie, an elementary education major, and mathematical statistics major Josh Knight, who led the student conversation with Chenoweth in Wait Chapel. At the end of the evening’s keynote event at the Joel, junior Ellie Howell, who is studying history and theatre, sang Elphaba’s part in “For Good” from the Broadway musical “Wicked” with Chenoweth singing Glinda’s. The two received a standing ovation.
At the event, they also announced the 2023-24 Face to Face Speaker Forum lineup:
- Doris Kearns Goodwin and Michael Beschloss – Presidential historian, political commentator, and Pulitzer Prize-winning and New York Times best-selling author Doris Kearns Goodwin meets Presidential historian, NBC News and PBS NewsHour, New York Times columnist and best-selling author Micahel Beschloss for a conversation. (September 27, 2023, Wait Chapel)
- Daymond John, CEO and Founder of American hip-hop apparel company FUBU, is a pioneer in the fashion industry with over $6 billion in product sales worldwide. He is best known for his commentary on ABC TV’s critically acclaimed business reality show Shark Tank, where he demonstrates his marketing prowess and business insights. (November 1, 2023, Wait Chapel)
- Liz Cheney and Jon Meacham – Former U.S. representative Liz Cheney, attorney, politician and author, served as the U.S. representative for Wyoming’s at-large congressional district from 2017 to 2023. She is co-author, along with her father Dick Cheney of, “Exceptional: Why the World Needs a Powerful America.” Jon Meacham, American writer, reviewer, historian and presidential biographer will join Cheney. (February 22, 2024, Wait Chapel)
- Trevor Noah, a South African comedian, writer, producer, political commentator, actor and the former host of The Daily Show. Noah is the author of the New York Times bestseller “Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood” and founder of the Trevor Noah Foundation to improve equitable access to quality education for underserved youth in South Africa. (April 17, 2024, Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum)
This is an incredible lineup of speakers, IMHO, and will offer great opportunities for our students to be engaged with big ideas through these speakers. Students will get in free to the student-only event, and families, if you are interested in seeing all these great folks, season subscriptions to the Face to Face Speaker Forum will be available starting today, April 13, on the Face to Face website.
My prediction: Trevor Noah is going to be a BIG hit with our students!

Correction to concert info
A correction to yesterday’s Daily Deac. We had said the upcoming Jazz Ensemble was Dr. Bowen’s last concert, but that is incorrect. He will also be co-conducting the Wind Ensemble on the 23rd. My apologies to Dr. Bowen!
