Today I want to devote the bulk of the blog to talking about a great opportunity for internships within the academic year, plus a few other highlights from campus. Here goes!

Sustainability internships; applications available

One of the big changes between my time in college (late 80s-early 90s) and today is the emphasis on students having internships prior to entering the workforce. And while students may tend to think of internships as primarily a summer activity, there are some really compelling opportunities for internships on campus with the Office of Sustainability that take place during the academic year.

Sustainability internships for the 23-24 academic year will give students “the opportunity to gain experience, build professional skills, and make a tangible impact on sustainability on campus and in the community. Each project-based position focuses on a specific area of sustainability, with topics fluctuating year-to-year based on changing needs and opportunities.” Your students can see the various internship options and learn more about the application process on their website.

In addition to the professional skills students will develop as a Sustainability intern, I was struck by some of the other benefits as well: “One of the hallmarks of the internship program is the tight-knit nature of the team. Interns develop close personal and professional relationships with one another through an orientation program, team-building opportunities, and collaborative weekly meetings in which they share feedback, identify how they can work together to accomplish their goals, and engage in professional development.”

This would be a fantastic opportunity for some of our Deacs, whether they are just interested in sustainability, are still looking to connect to a small group of classmates and find their niche, or if they want to gain valuable work experience this coming year. Share with your student if you think they would be interested.

Extended hours in the Pit for Ramadan

I received a message from Deacon Dining about adjusted operations in The Pit for those who take part in Ramadan. Starting this Thursday, March 30 until Friday April 21:

  • The Pit will stay open until 8:30 p.m.
  • Halal meats will be available at All Good daily
  • Dates will be available at the salad bar

And tomorrow I am doing the Ramadan Fast-A-Thon, so will appreciate all good thoughts :)

WFU in the News March 20-26

If you enjoy seeing where Wake Foresters appear in the media, here is the most recent issue of WFU in the News. We typically have a lot of golf fans in the Daily Deacdom, so you might especially like the article from a golf course superintendent.

Letters So Dear for our ’26 students
