After a string of unseasonably cold days, we are enjoying a bright and sunny day with temps expected to reach the low 60s. This is Good Mood Weather – warm and bright, and a profusion of flowers all over campus. I saw this meme yesterday that pretty much sums it up:

Almost a full foot of sunshine and it is still coming down. Stay safe, y'all!

Today I have a handful of opportunities your Deacs might want to explore, plus a really great Top 10 List in Letters So Dear.

Deacon Camp Leader application

One of the fun bonus parts of Orientation is our Pre-Orientation programs, where members of the Class of 2027 will move in a few days before official move-in and get to know a smaller group of their classmates around a shared interest. One of the Pre-Orientation programs is Deacon Camp, which looks at the history and traditions of Wake Forest. They are looking for current students to serve as Deacon Camp leaders:

“Join the Office of Civic & Community Engagement as a Deacon Camp student leader! Student leaders help welcome incoming students to Wake Forest prior to the start of New Deac Week.

Student leaders should be available to be on campus starting Friday, August 18. No previous experience with Deacon Camp is required. Students can apply here. Applications due by: Sun., April 2 by 11:59 p.m.”

Project Pumpkin Exec Board application

Project Pumpkin is one of the highlights of the fall, providing trick-or-treating and carnival games to local schoolchildren. It is an enormous undertaking and they need a lot of student leaders to help plan:

“If you are creative, work well on a team, and enjoy event planning and working with kids, you are perfect for the Project Pumpkin Executive Board! A Variety of roles are available.

Exec Board members are responsible for preliminary planning beginning in the Spring semester prior to Project Pumpkin in October 2023, in addition to a significant amount of time dedicated to the event for the first half of the Fall 2023 semester. Applications can be submitted here and are due Wed., March 29.”

Apply to the Summer Management Program (aka business boot camp for non-business majors)

The Summer Management Program – which some of us colloquially refer to as ‘business boot camp for non-business majors’ – takes place in the first session of summer school. It is a terrific program and gives students 8 hours of credit, which is a LOT. It’s a great way to learn about business and catch up on (or get ahead with) your credit hours.

“The Summer Management Program, hosted by the Business School, is accepting applications.  This Summer Session 1 course awards 8 credits in just 5 weeks to non-business majors. Students and families describe this program as transformational. For additional information, please refer to the website or contact Francie Powers at powersfv@wfu.edu.”

I’ve had so many of my academic advisees do this program and they all rave about it. If this is a fit for your Deac, please share.

Carowinds (amusement park) trip April 1

Do you have a student who likes roller coasters? Carowinds, located in Charlotte, boasts the “world’s tallest and fastest giga coaster,” Fury 325. To me, this is a stomach-churning, heart-attack inducing possibility, but my Class of ’27 son and Mr. Daily Deac are both coaster lovers, and they say this one is a real thriller. There are also other rides at Carowinds, of course.

Student Union is sponsoring an outing to Carowinds – space is limited, so your Deacs will need to act fast. Here are the details:

“Saturday, April 1st – 10:00 AM, Charlotte, NC. Join Student Union in taking a trip to Carowinds in Charlotte, NC. There is limited space, so you must RSVP by purchasing a $20 ticket covering transportation, entrance to the amusement park, and a meal. RSVP here

Letters So Dear with a great Top 10 list

This week’s issue of Letters So Dear went out to our ’26s yesterday. There was a terrific Top 10 list in there that I would recommend to all students, not just first years. Some very sage advice in that Top 10.

Campus safety advisory about car accident

Because it is our editorial policy to share any campuswide emails in the Daily Deac, this afternoon there was a campus safety advisory about a car accident near Reynolda Village.
