After days and days of rain, fog, and/or general gloom, today we got some peeks at the sun. It is supposed to start raining again late afternoon/early evening, but I’d bet you a cup of Camino Bakery coffee that your Deacs are relieved to see lighter skies, even if only briefly. Here’s a shot from the Quad Cam. a view of a not-rainy-at-last day on the Quad Cam

For those with Deacs still on campus taking finals, a few things to know:

  • Here are the hours of operation for dining venues for the rest of finals week.
  • The last day of the Student Health Service clinic operations this semester will be Dec. 10, with an on-call nurse available 24/7 to assist with healthcare concerns. A list of off-campus healthcare providers is available on this website. The SHS clinic will reopen on Jan. 9.
  • For students approved for break housing, see the winter break Operating Hours page for key campus services. Be sure to know which services are operating and when, and plan ahead as needed.

As finals end, it also means final grades are being calculated. Undergraduate faculty must report all fall semester grades by noon on Dec. 15. Students can expect to view their fall semester final grades on Friday, Dec. 16.

We know that as students finish finals and check out of their residence halls, they may also be checking out in the sense of not thinking about Wake. (Perhaps families will do this too, once their Deacs are home.) So I have been asked to put in a reminder about some key campus health guidance to keep in mind during winter break and before your students return in January. Our Campus Health Committee urges students to:

  • wear a well-fitting mask on public transportation when traveling home
  • avoid being around people who are actively ill
  • be cautious about large gatherings/consider masking
  • be up to date on flu and COVID vaccines
  • take a COVID test 72 hours before returning to campus
  • do not return to campus in January if you test positive for COVID (or if you are the flu, RSV, stomach bug, etc.) and only return when you are no longer contagious

We tend to have illness surges at the start of the semester, so we are stressing good health practices to avoid potential illness, particularly given the high levels of flu and RSV both regionally and nationally. We also wanted families to be aware of this guidance too, particularly the part about not moving back in January if you are actively ill/wait until you are no longer contagious.
