I wanted to share a couple of announcements that came to me late yesterday from Transportation and Parking Services: they have posted information about parking/traveling for Winter Break, (including where to park your registered vehicle if you are not driving home). Their Winter Break Airport Shuttle Registration is now live as well. I’d encourage you to book quickly if this is something your student needs.

For students who did not register a vehicle in the fall but want to do so for spring (thinking of you, P’24s whose students are currently abroad), there is information about Spring 2023 Vehicle Registration. In addition, there is information about January Arrival Information relative to parking.

Now to the meat of today. We’re midway through the Last Week of Classes. And it’s fair to say students are stressed out already about finals. We have lots of avenues of support and events to help them take their mind off of finals. Here are just a few events that are coming up on December 1st.

On December 1st from 12-2 p.m. in the Benson Food Court is Taking Care of Yourself at Home: Free Goodie Bags! “Coming home for winter break can bring up feelings of excitement, nervousness, or both. Whether you’re looking forward to going home or stressed out over the thought, stop by our tabling booth for some tips and a free self-care goodie bag!”

If holiday crafts are more your Deac’s jam there is a Gingerbread House Decorating Competition on December 1 from 5-6 p.m. in Zicks: “Join Student Union in a Gingerbread House Decorating Competition, just in time for the holidays. The decorating kits will be provided to students and you will have 1 hour to design the best gingerbread house. The top three decorators will win a prize!! RSVP here to secure your spot in the competition!”

Pizza and Exam Strategies is being offered by CLASS (Center for Learning, Access, and Student Success: “Come to the Johnson Residence Hall Main Lobby at 6 p.m. on Thursday, December 1st for pizza. ALL students are invited, not just Johnson Hall residents. Academic coaches from CLASS will be there to share strategies for preparing for exams and reducing stress. During this casual working session, students will create a final exam study plan and learn techniques for reducing exam stress.”

Finally there is a great intellectual opportunity for your students to take a break from studies and hear from renowned scholar Dr. Cornel West: “the author, activist, philosopher, public intellectual, and civil rights leader is coming back to Wake Forest. The Program for Leadership and Character has invited him to take part in a moderated discussion about character and education, and we’re expecting a lively and insightful evening. The event will be held on December 1 at 6 p.m. in Wait Chapel. It’s free, open to the public, and requires no advance registration.”

If your Deacs aren’t aware of these events – and many more I did not list – they need to check out the Corq app or The Link (which feeds into Corq). There are so many ways for your Deacs to take a quick break from their work to engage in fun, thought-provoking, and renewing diversions. Sometimes the hour you spend disconnecting from your studies is the refreshment you need to come back to your work ready to rock and roll!

Tomorrow is December, friends. DECEMBER. Am I the only one that thinks this semester has just flown by???
