Happy Friday, Deac families! Today the campus community received an email about updating pandemic protocols. This message was also sent to current parents and families (P’23-’26, now that our P’22s have graduated). One of the takeaways from the message is that in the coming weeks, we will be redistributing the content currently on Our Way Forward to websites of appropriate departments on campus. More on that as I have it.
’26 students(and incoming transfer students) received an email today about June advising and planning for registration. Students should be reading and digesting that message and taking appropriate action. You can help support your ’26’s independence and self-management skills by asking them “which items are you working on this week?” instead of reminding them that “X, Y, Z are due on [date].” This helps reinforce that it is their responsibility to manage their due dates and action items, and that you trust them to get it done. This will be key to them being ready to self-manage when they arrive for the fall semester.
Speaking of the fall semester, for any students scheduled to go abroad this fall, Residence Life and Housing sent this message about housing expectations and processes.
’26 students and incoming transfer students also got a message yesterday about Project Wake: ADAPT/CONNECT/GROW. Project Wake enables students to choose from a list of books to read over the summer and then participate in a discussion at Orientation, led by a Wake Forest faculty or staff member and meet other new students interested in the same book. It’s optional but highly recommended.
One of the great benefits of Project Wake is it allows students to meet other new students in a small group, which helps them begin to build their social network, but also allows them to get comfortable having stimulating intellectual discussions (which they will be doing for the next 4 years). P’26s, best advice here would be to ask them if they saw the email and are considering Project Wake, but not get involved in the details yourself; let them do the work researching if this is an opportunity they want to pursue, and let them choose their book independently (if applicable).
Wishing everyone in the Daily Deacdom a great weekend!
