I am back in the Dash – aka Winston-Salem – and in the week I was gone, Mother Nature has been hard at work. Everything is in full bloom and absolutely gorgeous, though it is colder today than it should be (around 55 degrees). It will be warmer through the rest of the week.

While I was away, several campus departments sent me information they hope we’d share with families. Here goes:

CLASS (Center for Learning, Access, and Student Success) is offering its final OWLS (Outreach Workshop Learning Series) session of the spring semester. It will be held Wednesday, April 27th at 4pm in Reynolda 301 and is entitled “Finish Strong: Strategies for Taking Final Exams and Reducing Stress.” Encourage your Deacs to go if they are interested.

For students interested in learning more about Summer Session, there will be a Summer Session FAQ Table for students to drop by this Thursday, April 21. The table will be in the 2nd Floor atrium in the Benson University Center, outside the food court, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A team of assessors from the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA) will arrive on April 23 to examine all aspects of the Wake Forest University Police Department’s policies, procedures, management, operations, and support services. University community members, agency employees and the public are invited to offer comments on Monday, April 25. Read more.

For families in the DC area, the Wake Forest University Washington, DC Community invites you to an exclusive book event and leadership discussion with Cicely Simpson, author of Pull Up Your C.H.A.I.R. – five strategies to change the trajectory of your career based on each letter of the word C.H.A.I.R: Champion Yourself, Honesty, Adaptability, Impact, and Regrets. This will be held on May 10th; details and registration.

For our P’25s, your Deacs got their Letters So Dear yesterday; you can check out their archive (where you can see last week’s message too).

Families of graduating ’22 students (undergraduates) received this message with information about Commencement.

And several congratulations are in order:

Congratulations to our Women’s Golf team, who just won the ACC Championship! This is the second title in four years for the Demon Deacons and the seventh in program history. You can read more about the victory here.

Congratulations to our Debate Team: sophomores Asya Taylor and Dimarvin Puerto won the 2022 Cross Examination Debate Association National Championship. This is Wake Debate’s first CEDA championship. See more at the Wake Debate Facebook page.

Congratulations to junior Tal Feldman, who was named a 2022 Truman Scholar. Feldman is majoring in economics and mathematics. The Truman Scholarship is the most competitive national scholarship program for juniors in the country.

Congratulations to three Wake Forest faculty – math and statistics professor Abbey Bourdon, chemistry professor John Lukesh and engineering professor Erin Henslee – who have been named National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program Award winners. Each will receive a five-year grant ranging from $400,000 to $625,000 to support their work. Given to outstanding scientists, the highly-competitive CAREER awards are the NSF’s most prestigious for junior faculty and are intended to provide a foundation for a lifetime of scientific leadership that integrates research and education. To get one of these awards for your school is a big deal – but to have three at once is a major accomplishment and a testament to the strength of our faculty.
