Today’s big news: the Family Weekend date has just been announced: Family Weekend 2022 will be held the weekend of October 7-9. Details about the weekend will not be available until later this spring, but we wanted you to have the date as soon as possible for calendar purposes.

Fall Break was originally scheduled for October 6-9, but will now be held October 13-16, per the undergraduate Academic Services calendar.

There are a number of considerations that we look at for the timing of Family Weekend; hotel availability is a critical part of those considerations, and we also don’t want a date that is too close to move-in in August or too late in the semester. The Furniture Market that takes place each fall uses most of the available hotel space in the Triad, which ruled out some of the other weekends. After careful consideration of hotel space, as well as the need to schedule Homecoming and other big event weekends, October 7-9 ended up being the best option for Family Weekend.

In other news, I hope your Deacs were able to go to the Face to Face event with Yo-Yo Ma last night; sadly I was not able to be there myself. Our Ken Bennett did a photostory about the event, which you can see here. One of my friends who was at the event shared on social media that at the end of the event, when Yo-Yo Ma asked our string quartet students (who had played pre-event) to join him on stage, he asked the cellist “would you like to play my cello?” and they swapped instruments.

Can. You. Imagine.????!?!?!?!?!?!?

That is the memory of a lifetime right there, for all those student musicians.

You know I am a big fan of our Wake Washington program. It’s a great example of experiential learning, where students are combining classroom work with real-world internships. I happened upon a blog post by one of our Wake Washington students, Elizabeth McDonald (’23) on the importance of listening, and thought you might enjoy it. They have an archive too, if you want to review past posts.
