How is it possible that it is already June? And yet here we are. Summer Session I started on May 24th, so we do have some Deacs here for summer school, as well as others taking classes online at home. For those living on campus, they received a message about mold and mildew prevention; this is a standard message that gets sent at the start of every semester (or summer school) about how to prevent mold and mildew.
June will have extra meaning for our incoming P’25 families: the next few weeks will likely be be the wrapping up of high school, with graduation, parties or family gatherings, etc. And then, the attention will turn to your Deacs getting ready for college! In case you have missed it, we do have a Parents and Families section of the New Students website for you, which is chock full of information, advice, deadlines, and more. Your ’25s received an email today about preparing for course registration; you can read it – as well as past messages to our incoming ’25s – here. Please do remind your ’25s to check their WFU email daily. Lots of messages will come to them over the summer, and students are expected to read their email and reply promptly to requests or action items.
The magnolias are blooming all over campus right now. As I have said in years past, there is something magical about the lush, heady smell of magnolias, particularly on a hot summer night. If you know the scent, you know what I mean. And if you don’t, hopefully you’ll find yourself on campus sometime in the future where you can see for yourself.
Garden & Gun has a great article about the scent of magnolias, and how it is so quintessentially southern. It’s worth a read. And just for good measure, here are some magnolias of summers past, from the archives of our Ken Bennett. I like that he has a range of pictures here: from tight buds that are nice and white, to the starting-to-brown blooms that are just past their peak, as well as the glossy, waxy leaves – so green on the top, but leathery brown on the underside.
If only I could bring you the scent via this blog…
