Today the campus received a message from President Hatch sharing that Penny Rue, our Vice President for Campus Life, has announced her plans to retire. Dr. Hatch said this:

Her vision for comprehensive wellbeing led to the expansion of the Reynolds gym into the state-of-the-art Wake Forest Wellbeing Center and the creation of the Thrive program. She has elevated campus conversations about diversity, equity and inclusion. From establishing the Police Accountability Task Force to hiring the first Title IX director, she has put caring people and essential programs in place to strengthen our community.

In full disclosure, Penny was part of my doctoral committee, so I was privileged to get to know her in a different way outside of our work together at Wake Forest. She has been an incredible colleague, mentor, and friend, and I wish her every happiness in her next chapter.

A few more updates as we close out the week. The Office of Residence Life and Housing sent this message to rising sophomores who had not yet selected housing by late Wednesday afternoon/early evening. This message went to any rising junior who had not selected. I know this process can feel stressful to our students. Encourage them to trust the process. Things have a way of working themselves out.

We’ve had a few questions about the Class of 2021 diplomas. The official date of Wake Forest degree conferral is always the third Monday in May (regardless of the Commencement Ceremony date). So even though the diploma ceremonies were held on May 16 this year, May 17 is the correct degree conferral date, not a misprint. Also a reminder that the commemorative Commencement programs are being printed right now, and will be sent to your students in several weeks.

Our fiscal year ends on June 30th, and we have not yet met our donor goal of 3,400 parents and families making a gift to the Parents’ Campaign of the Wake Forest Fund. If you have not made a gift this year, please consider a gift (of ANY amount) to help us reach our goal. You can give online securely here or you can send a check (payable to WFU) to P O Box 7227, Winston-Salem, NC 27109 ATTN: Office of Family Engagement. In order for your gift to count in this year’s campaign, the check must be dated June 30 or earlier AND the envelope must be postmarked by June 30.

We will not have a Daily Deac tomorrow, as the University is recognizing the Juneteenth holiday. But never fear: we’ll be back on Monday with another edition of Meet A Deac! Have a great rest of the week, Daily Deacdom!
