This morning we had a test of our Wake Alert system. It consisted of an email, text, and voicemail message sent to campus community members, and a red banner at the top of WFU websites. I was not on campus, but the outdoor alert system was supposed to have been tested as well. There are several large speakers on campus; one is outside Scales Fine Arts Center on Davis Field. It reminds me of a big pole with what looks like a bunch of soup tureens on top; you can see a pic here.

There was a terrific story out of Athletics today about some of our student-athletes who are working with faculty on research. Soccer player Mia Albery (’22) explains: “When someone gets an artery blocked, a lot of times they will put a metal stent in it,” Albery explained. “But one of the problems with that is that the blood can re-occlude, so there will be another blockage or the stent will deform. His research, and what I’m involved in, is coming up with a new kind of stent for the artery.” You can read the full story here. One of the great distinctives of a Wake Forest education is that undergraduate students have the ability to approach faculty about getting involved in research projects. If your Deac has a favorite faculty member or favorite subject, I hope they might consider getting involved if they can.

Run DMC style shirts at Hit the BricksMy talented colleagues have created a video recapping Hit the Bricks, which I hope you will enjoy. The Gen X families among us might appreciate that we had students in the video wearing Run WFU shirts that riffed on the old Run DMC logo 🙂

And if you want a taste of what’s going on in Wake Washington, you can read their blog. Today, senior Haleigh Cadd talks about what DC feels like in the pandemic. Definitely not business as usual, but DC is still an incredible place.

Speaking of DC, an email went to the campus community today from President Hatch about the upcoming Face to Face event on October 20th with Peggy Noonan and Eugene Robinson. This comes just two weeks before the election and will discuss the history of the presidency and our democracy and how it appears to have evolved the election season. Hope your Deacs all register – this is an amazing extra for them!

Student Union has a number of events coming up soon. They are doing Movie Nights again – and there are some terrific ones on their list, including Knives Out and Parasite. There will be a Mason Jar decorating event on October 8th on Davis Field. If your Deac is still looking for a niche and ways to get involved, urge them to consider joining Student Union’s standing committees. They say “Not a member last semester? No worries, we’re always happy to have you! No experience or commitment necessary.”

Remember that Wake is a smorgasbord. Try as many bites as you can.
