Back to sunny skies
Our little adventure with Zeta is over for most of Winston-Salem, although some folks in town are regrettably still out of power. Today we were back to sunny skies, though markedly cooler, high of only about 60 degrees.
This weekend is Halloween, which is normally a highly social party weekend for students. With the pandemic, we have to adjust our behavior. Students received a Halloween-themed Your Corona Chronicle yesterday and were reminded of how we want to end the semester in a good way, not something out of a horror movie. You can check out the dashboard, which has a health update from yesterday (10/29); we expect an update early next week.
So anything you can do, Daily Deacdom, to thank students for behaving well and encouraging them to follow the guidelines by avoiding crowded places will help us a lot this weekend.
Dr. Hatch also sent a message out to the campus today in advance of the upcoming election. It said, in part, “Whether or not your candidate wins or your party prevails, our strength as a country depends on our unity. We have a decision as a community, and I am asking that you choose to band together to ward off the division that easily sets us one against another. Choose to see beyond party and beyond politics to see the inherent value of people at Wake Forest, in our local community and beyond.” You can read the full message here.
One of my colleagues in our News Service has a wonderful story to tell about employment: “Amid all things scary and Halloween-y here is a bright spot related to career development and employment. During the pandemic, organizations want access to top talent early. Andy Chan, vice president of innovation and career development says, ‘For our juniors and sophomores, there are surprisingly more internships available now than there were last year when the economy was hot.’” Read the full story here.
I got a message from Student Union this afternoon saying “We can’t go home for the semester without lighting up our favorite campus! Join us in hearing words of encouragement from President Hatch and other university favorites before watching the quad be illuminated (Halloween style) tonight at 7 PM. Watch the livestream here!” Hopfully your students will take advantage of this.
This weekend we have elected to open the Call Center, so you can reach us at 336-758-7500 on Saturday or Sunday between 10 am and 2 pm Eastern if you need us.
Stay well, and have a spooktacularly safe Halloween!
