March comes in like a lion
March officially ushers in Women’s History Month. Here is some information from our Women’s Center:
We are excited to celebrate Women’s History Month 2020. Our theme this year is “Suffrage to Solidarity” which seeks to reflect on the 100 year anniversary of the 19th amendment while recognizing the multiple narratives that contribute to the movement for women’s rights. Please join us for our exciting programming this March.
March also means it’s time for Spring Break (March 7-15). Many of our students will travel home, or to a friend’s home, to Wake Alternative Break (a great series of service projects), or perhaps on vacation.
For our Deacs staying on campus, they should be aware of the Spring Break Hours of Operation for campus dining and plan accordingly. If your Deac is going to be traveling, here are some things you may wish to talk about prior to them leaving campus:
Communication: Carry your cell phone at all times. Be sure a family member knows your travel plans, where you are staying, and when you will return.
Health: Remember all medications. Use sunscreen if you are in a sunny location. Do not accept food or drinks from strangers.
Money: Always have enough money to get back to your house/hotel. Take only one credit card and your debit card; keep them on you at all times. Know the phone number to cancel credit cards if stolen.
General: If driving, be sure the car is in good working order. Use the buddy system: once you reach your destination, don’t go anywhere alone; go in pairs or groups.
As parents and loved ones, you will no doubt have additional things to talk to your traveling Deac about, so sprinkle in your own recommendations.
Some of you have asked if I have any update on coronavirus. I can tell you that our Crisis Management Team continues to take the situation seriously. We have a large team that is meeting frequently. One of the challenges associated with the coronavirus situation is that things are changing very rapidly. Please know that University health officials have been in contact with our Infectious Disease consultants at the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and the Medical Director of the Forsyth County Health Department Communicable Diseases Division, and will continue to follow recommendations of the CDC. As a reminder, all info we have can be found here: https://coronavirus.wfu.edu/.
Because it’s Monday, we have another issue of Letters So Dear for our first-year students; read it here. And if your Deacs (of any year) have midterms or papers due this week before Spring Break, show them a little extra love and TLC. They need it!
Finally, tomorrow is Super Tuesday! For students registered to vote in NC, there are shuttles to polling stations (see graphics below). There is also a results-watching party. Please urge your Deacs to exercise their civic duty and vote!
