News from Campus
Today I have a few items to share from various corners of campus. First, a feel proud to be a Deac story, courtesy of our News Service:
“Wake Forest University senior Addison S. McLamb is one of 111 Schwarzman Scholars selected for the master’s degree program at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China.
The inaugural class was selected from more than 3,000 applicants, making the program one of the most selective in the world with an acceptance rate of 3.7 percent. The first class of Schwarzman Scholars, which was inspired by the Rhodes Scholarship program, is composed of students from 32 countries and 71 universities with 44 percent from the United States, 21 percent from China, and 35 percent from the rest of the world.
A Lexington, N.C., native, McLamb, who is majoring in Chinese, is also an Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) cadet who recently captured the number 5 spot on the national Order of Merit List.” You can read the full story here.
I am not surprised when I find out that Wake students are doing great things – but I don’t get to know nearly as many students as I’d like to, so it is always wonderful to get to read about their fine accomplishments.
Next up is a Public Service Announcement from the Student Health Service:
Winter has hit the campus at Wake Forest and so has the flu. Influenza is common to occur in the winter months and is spread more readily with the close contact that occurs when students stay indoors to keep warm.
Student Health Service is recommending that students who have not yet received a flu vaccine to do so now. It is not too late to receive this vaccine which is the best protection against contracting this virus. Flu shots are available in Student Health Service without an appointment Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 4 PM (Tuesdays 10 AM- 4 PM).
Students who have symptoms of the flu should not attend classes until their symptoms have improved and they have been free of fever for 24 hours. Appointments are available in Student Health Service for students who are ill and need care from a medical provider. Having heard a couple of stories about students with the flu, please do urge your students to take good hygiene measures and get the flu vaccine. Flu is no fun at all – especially if you aren’t where mom and dad can give you the TLC you need.

The Unbroken Circle, Wake Forest’s Multigenerational String Band, will present its annual Shalom Project Fundraiser in Byrum Welcome Center on Saturday evening, January 30 at 7 pm.
Another cold morning for your Deacs with 8 or 9 am classes. Was 26 first thing this morning, but feels like 19 according to the Weather Channel. Thankfully we’re not predicted to have bad weather – other than cold. I feel for all of you who are supposed to get lake effect snow. Please don’t send it south to us 🙂
