The following email was sent to current undergraduate parents/family members from Vice President for Campus Life, Penny Rue.

———-

Dear Wake Forest parents and families,

Crimes reported on and near campus over the past few months prompted many of you to ask what we are doing at Wake Forest to ensure student safety. There is no higher priority for us than the safety of your students. We have taken a number of steps to enhance student safety, including the addition of an onCall on-demand shuttle, adding additional police officers and patrols on and around campus, and promoting the LiveSafe app to students. We continue to look for ways we can refine and improve our safety measures.

We’ve also heard from parents and families that you wish to have direct communication from the University when a crime alert is shared with the student population. We have come up with several options that we hope will provide you with the communication you seek.

Crime alerts emailed to faculty, staff, and students will now also be posted to wakeready.wfu.edu, in addition to the Family News section of the Parents and Families website.

You can receive an email when a new crime alert is posted by entering your email address here. Emails are sent daily at noon, but only if new updates have been posted in the previous 24 hours.

We plan to add a section about campus safety and security to the monthly Wake Parents and Families e-newsletter. In addition to a monthly roundup of crime alerts, this section may include additional context about the incidents (when possible), resources available to students/crime prevention tips, and recent steps the University has taken to improve security. This e-newsletter goes out to parents mid-month and issues are also archived online.

We will continue to reserve mass emails to all parents for special circumstances that require the attention of the full parent and family constituency. Emails from me, or other campus administrators, will notify you of a true emergency requiring your students to take action, trends that you may want to talk to your students about, and/or other issues that deserve special attention.

No institutional communication plan can ever replicate the value of regular communication with your student. Please continue to encourage them to share with you, and with us, thoughts and concerns about safety and security.

Thank you for your partnership in keeping our students safe,

Penny Rue
Vice President of Campus Life
