Zipcars and Zimride

The following message is from the Office of Sustainability.

Students – are you tired of paying for gas and on-campus parking? Wake Forest offers a suite of alternative transportation options to help our students get where they need to go without the hassle and expense of keeping a car on campus. For $35 per year, plus low hourly rates starting at $7.50 (including gas and insurance), a student can become a member of the Zipcar car-sharing program.

It’s easy: students can just register online and receive their membership cards in the mail. Once a student has a zipcard, he or she can use it to make an online reservation for one of the three Zipcars on campus. It can take up to two weeks to receive a zipcard by mail, so winter break is the perfect time to sign up.

Zipcar is a great option for errands or other trips around town, but students going on longer trips should register with Zimride, a ride-sharing network for Wake Forest students, faculty, and staff. Zimride works by connecting drivers who have extra seats with riders going to the same destination or somewhere else along the way. Drivers and riders connect via Zimride’s website or Facebook page, where drivers can list their destination and the number of seats available and riders can book a seat in a car headed in the right direction. Cost-sharing arrangements are made by ride-sharers up front before the departure date.

Zimride is a secure network and can only be joined by those affiliated with Wake Forest University. Students can opt to see ride-sharing information posted by those attending trusted partner schools, however, they may also elect only to see information posted by other Wake Forest users. Students who used Zimride for trips to the airport or home for the Thanksgiving holiday reported positive experiences and having enjoyed sharing the ride with fellow Demon Deacons.

In addition to Zipcar and Zimride, the university offers an extensive shuttle service that runs to many areas of Winston-Salem, including downtown and local shopping areas. For more information about the shuttle schedules, visit the Ride-the-Wake website.
