Month of Occupational Wellbeing

For December, as part of the Thrive campaign, the Office of Wellbeing is highlighting Occupational Wellbeing. We know that Wake Forest is a fun and engaging place, but we also understand that it can offer some challenges. For some students, right before the holiday break can be a very stressful time.  Students are busy wrapping up their classes,  submitting final papers, and preparing for exams. In addition, they’re deciding in which direction to take their academic and personal journeys next year. Creativity, innovation, and self discovery are key principles here at Wake Forest. We encourage our students to look beyond their pre-determined ideas of what they should be doing to discover the lives they want to lead. We want them to find what they’re passionate about while still helping them reach their maximum potential.   As parents, we encourage you to support your students as they are coming home from finals and share with them in their explorations and dreams. This article highlights new findings from Harvard Graduate School of Education on the importance of helping teens and young adults set goals and explore their interests! There’s no limit to what our students could do!

Activities this Month:

We hope your student joined us for the Stress Less Fest – Community Program – 12-3pm December 4th in Benson University Center

We partnered with Benson University Center, the Learning Assistance Center, Office of Personal Career Development, Active Minds, Student Union, Information Systems and the Resident Student Association to bring students a stress free environment right before exam week.  We offered activities to help students relax, kick back and take their minds off all the different things that were happening as the semester came to a close; including free massages, a chance to play with puppies, and some sweet treats for everyone to enjoy! In addition, there was snow globe making, cupcake decorating and many other fun activities and giveaways for the students to enjoy.  We hoped many of our favorite Demon Deacons got to stop by and enjoy in the festivities before their exams!

Winter Break:

As your students are finishing final exams, we encourage you to raise conversation on how their fall semester went. Reflect on their experiences and how they have adjusted to the rigors and challenges of this academic semester. What went well? What didn’t? Why and how can they learn and improve? Reflection is critical for development and wellbeing! See what the Association for Psychological Science has to say about the relationship between reflection and wellbeing in thisarticle.  As your students unwind and decompress from this fall semester, motivate them to be proactive and mindful of courses they plan to take and organizations they plan to join and how these decisions will shape their journey as Demon Deacons and as future leaders of the world.
