There is a service opportunity coming up this weekend that may be of interest to your students.  This would be a great way for any students who are looking for meaningful ways to connect with new friends, while serving our “Pro Humanitate” motto.  Please encourage your students to act quickly, as the deadline is today!

MLK NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE: JANUARY 19, 2013

Did you have fun escorting kids around during Project Pumpkin?

If you said yes, you have a second fantastic opportunity to do so during the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

Saturday, January 19, 2013 from 9:00-1:00 in Benson

This year, kids will be coming onto campus and we need about 50 escorts to take them around to all the fun activities.

Event details: The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Holiday and Day of Service promotes Dr. King’s ideals about serving others, equality, and non-violence. Please join us for a Read-In event that promotes literacy and service to children ages 4-10. Each child will be given at least one donated age-appropriate book and one new civil rights themed book to keep.

Escort details: As a volunteer, you will work with 1-2 children as a guide for 2.5 hours the day of the event. You will lead the children through each of our service stations and help them create letters for the troops, make a banner about their dreams for the future, and learn about nutrition, anti-bullying, and Dr. King’s life and legacy. In addition, you will guide them to a reading station where you and the child will read a book together.

Mandatory Training Session: All volunteers must also attend a training session on Wednesday, January 16 from 5:30-6:30!

How to Sign Up:

1. You can sign up online through HandsOn Northwest North Carolina

2. You will need to create a 1-800-volunteer account (basic info is sufficient, the “Skills & Availability” section is not required)”

3. Select that you are available on Saturday on the MLK Reading and Service Buddy opportunity page and click Express Interest to submit

4. Someone from HandsOn will contact you to confirm participation

**Sign-ups must be completed before Jan. 14th, 2013**  (NOTE: we are asking if they will accept late applications, since we just received notice of this).
